2013 & 79811

~ 2013 and 79811 Are Unusual Thanksgivings! ~

Unique  ~  Thanksgiving Day 2013 will be the very first Thanksgiving Day in United Stated history when the first day of Hanukkah (Feast of Dedication) and Thanksgiving Day occur on the same day.  This will not happen again until the year 79811.

Why?  ~  In the United States Thanksgiving Day is always the fourth Thursday in November—which means the latest it can be is November 28 (like it is this year).  The earliest day that the first day of Hanukkah can occur is November 28.

The last time these two holidays coincided was in 1861—however, Thanksgiving Day was not established until 1863 by President Lincoln.

The Jewish lunar calendar is a tiny bit out of sync with our solar calendar.  The earliest the first day of Hanukkah will be for many future years is November 29.  Eventually the two holidays will merge again—but not until the year 79811.

Implications  ~  Consider two: (1) In many Jewish homes the mashed potatoes of Thanksgiving will be replaced with potato pancakes (latkes) of Hanukkah.  (2) As we Christians celebrate our gratitude with Thanksgiving, what a wonderful time it provides for rededicating ourselves to our Lord and Savior in the spirit of the Feast of Dedication.

Conclusion  ~  If you believe, as I do, that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—The Messiah, will return long before the year 79811, this year will be the only time we will be able to say “Happy Thanksgivukkah!”

Law vs. Grace, 11of12

~ Human Power vs. Divine Power ~

introduction:  The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Galatians to the believers of this local church at a time when they were beginning to reject the gospel of grace and were instead moving backward toward obedience of the Mosaic Law as the means of winning favor with God. Paul’s purpose in writing was to point out the dramatic differences between Law and Grace.

Human Power vs. Divine Power

LAW  ~  Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

GRACE  ~  I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:16-18, 22-23).

summary:  The bottom line of understanding Law vs. Grace is a theology of “DO or DONE!” Are you still trying to DO things to earn your salvation, or do you understand that it was DONE for you on the Cross of Calvary by Jesus Christ—you only need to accept/trust His provision on your behalf?

“Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24). “Not by works of righteousness which we do, but according to His mercy He saves us” (Titus 3:5a).

notes:  (1) The fourth Tuesday of each month during 2013 ALN will look at one aspect of “Law vs. Grace” as seen in the Book of Galatians.

(2) In addition to this series of 12 posts on Law vs. Grace, you might take a look at two previous ALN posts.  Law vs. Grace (July 6, 2010) and Law vs. Grace, 2 (July 5, 2011), as well as The Core Message of the Bible #2 (February 1, 2011).

Jesus Christ Our Peace

~ Can You Comprehend it?  No! ~

Jesus Christ through the Cross of Calvary made provision for our restoration of fellowship with God.  He is the source of peace.

God Is The Source Of Peace  ~  Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.  Amen” (Hebrews 13:20-21).

Jesus Christ Directs Us Into His Peace  ~  And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:76-79).

God Allows Us To Have A Perfectly Complete Peace  ~  You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

God’s Peace Is Beyond Comprehension  ~  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Messiah, 127

~ Messiah Would Be a Blessing To Gentiles, 5 ~

 “Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, as when at first He lightly esteemed the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward more heavily oppressed her, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined” (Isaiah 9:1-2).

The Messiah
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in” (Romans 11:25).

Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned’” (Matthew 4:12-16).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
