Jesus Was Rejected, 21

~ Jesus Was Arrested, 1 ~

This Series ~ Jesus Christ came to earth to save sinners. He lived a sinless life. He was a truly righteous man. But He was rejected by mankind. He died a cruel, painful death as a penalty for our sins. Those who now accept Him and trust Him for eternal salvation will live forever with Him without any more pains or sadness.

Scripture ~ “And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people

48 “Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, ‘Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.’ 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed Him.

50 “But Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, why have you come?’

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 “But Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?’

55 “In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, ‘Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.’

“Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled” (Matthew 26:47 –56).

Scripture ~ “Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, ‘You also were with Jesus of Galilee.’70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

“And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, ‘This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.’ 72 But again he denied with an oath, ‘I do not know the Man!’

73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, ‘Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.’ 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!

“Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ So he went out and wept bitterly” (Matthew 26:69 –75, also see Mark 14:66–72; Luke 22:55–62; and John 18:15–18, 25–27).

~ Jesus Was Disowned By His Own, 1 ~

This Series ~ Jesus Christ came to earth to save sinners. He lived a sinless life. He was a truly righteous man. But He was rejected by mankind. He died a cruel, painful death as a penalty for our sins. Those who now accept Him and trust Him for eternal salvation will live forever with Him without any more pains or sadness.

Scripture ~ “Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

3He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.

8 “He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who will declare His generation?

For He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgressions of My people He was stricken” (Isaiah 53:1-8).

Scripture ~ “Then they secretly induced men to say, ‘We have heard him (Stephen) speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.’

12 “And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.

13 They also set up false witnesses who said, ‘This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.’

15 And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel” (Acts 6:11-15).

“Then Pilate asked Him, saying, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ He answered him and said, ‘It is as you say.’

“So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, ‘I find no fault in this Man.’

“But they were the more fierce, saying, ‘He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place’” (Luke 23:1-5).

59 “Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. Jesus Was Rejected, 15

~ Jesus Was Betrayed, 2 ~

This Series ~ Jesus Christ came to earth to save sinners. He lived a sinless life. He was a truly righteous man. But He was rejected by mankind. He died a cruel, painful death as a penalty for our sins. Those who now accept Him and trust Him for eternal salvation will live forever with Him without any more pains or sadness.

Scripture ~ “And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’

49 “When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, ‘Lord, shall we strike with the sword?’ 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 “But Jesus answered and said, ‘Permit even this.’ And He touched his ear and healed him.

52 “Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, ‘Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness’” (Luke 22:47 –53, see also Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–50; and John 18:2–11).

Commentary ~ Nothing can be a greater affront or grief to the Lord Jesus, than to be betrayed by those who profess to be His followers, and say that they love Him. Many instances there are, of Christ’s being betrayed by those who, under the form of godliness, fight against the power of it. Jesus here gave an illustrious example of His own rule of doing good to those that hate us, as afterwards he did of praying for those that despitefully use us. Corrupt nature warps our conduct to extremes; we should seek for the Lord’s direction before we act in difficult circumstances. Christ was willing to wait for his triumphs till his warfare” (Luke 22:47 –53 MHCCB).
