~ Slandered In Court, 3 ~

This Series ~ Jesus Christ came to earth to save sinners. He lived a sinless life. He was a truly righteous man. But He was rejected by mankind. He died a cruel, painful death as a penalty for our sins. Those who now accept Him and trust Him for eternal salvation will live forever with Him without any more pains or sadness.

 

Scripture ~ “Then they secretly induced men to say, ‘We have heard him (Stephen) speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.’

 

¹² “And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.

 

¹³ “They also set up false witnesses who said, ‘This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; ¹⁴ for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.’

 

¹⁵ And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel” (Acts 6:11-15).

~ Jesus Was Betrayed, 2 ~

Scripture ~ “And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. ⁴⁸ But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’

 

⁴⁹ “When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, ‘Lord, shall we strike with the sword?’ ⁵⁰ And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

 

⁵¹ “But Jesus answered and said, ‘Permit even this.’ And He touched his ear and healed him.

 

⁵² “Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, ‘Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? ⁵³ When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness’” (Luke 22:47 –53, see also Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–50; and John 18:2–11).

 

Commentary ~ “Nothing can be a greater affront or grief to the Lord Jesus, than to be betrayed by those who profess to be His followers, and say that they love Him. Many instances there are, of Christ’s being betrayed by those who, under the form of godliness, fight against the power of it. Jesus here gave an illustrious example of His own rule of doing good to those that hate us, as afterwards he did of praying for those that despitefully use us. Corrupt nature warps our conduct to extremes; we should seek for the Lord’s direction before we act in difficult circumstances. Christ was willing to wait for his triumphs till his warfare” (Luke 22:47 –53 MHCCB).

Scripture ~ “And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, ‘Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.’

 

⁴⁵ “As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi!’ and kissed Him.

Scripture ~ “But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. ² Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. ³ Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, ⁴ they said to Him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. ⁵ Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?’ ⁶ This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.
