~ Aspects of Our Savior’s Face ~

The Savior’s Face (in Scripture)  ~  We see many descriptions of our Savior’s face throughout Scripture—especially in the four Gospels 

The Shining Face (at the Transfiguration)  ~  “Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them.  His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew 17:1-2). 

The Shamed Face (in persecution)  ~  “Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, ‘Prophesy to us, Christ!  Who is the one who struck You?’” (Matthew 26:67-68).

The Shrouded Face (in derision)  ~  “Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, ‘Prophesy!’  And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands” (Mark 14:65). 

The Struck Face (in opposition)  ~  “And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, ‘Prophesy!  Who is the one who struck You?’” (Luke 22:64).

The Scarred Face (in substitution)  ~  “Just as many were astonished at you, so His visage was marred more than any man” (Isaiah 52:14a).

additional comment  ~  Many artist images of Christ make Him out as an attractive man of His time period.  But note what the Scripture says: “For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground.  He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him” (Isaiah 53:2).

contemplate:  (1) “And we [mankind] hid, as it were, our faces from Him” (Isaiah 53:3).  (2) “They [His believers] shall see His face” (Revelation 22:4a). 

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

~ Consider Some of the Faces of Jesus Christ ~

A Strong Face  ~  –  “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51).

A Bowed Face  ~  “He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will’” (Matthew 26:39).

An Insulted Face  ~  “Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, ‘Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?’” (Matthew 26:67-68).

A Covered Face  ~  “Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, ‘Prophesy!’ And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands” (Mark 14:65).

A Struck Face  ~   “Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, ‘Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?’  And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him” (Luke 22:63-65). 

A Shining Face  ~   “And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew 17:2).

A Glorious Face  ~   “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

An Awe-Inspiring Face  ~   “And said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!’” (Revelation 6:16). “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them” (Revelation 20:11).

contemplate: “And we [mankind] hid, as it were, our faces from Him” (Isaiah 53:3). 

A Welcoming Face  ~   “They [His believers] shall see His face” (Revelation 22:4a). 

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
