~ Aspects of Our Savior’s Face ~
The Savior’s Face (in
Scripture) ~ We see many descriptions of our Savior’s face
throughout Scripture—especially in the four Gospels
The Shining Face (at
the Transfiguration) ~ “Now after six days
Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain
by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face
shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew
17:1-2).
The Shamed Face (in
persecution) ~ “Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the
palms of their hands, saying, ‘Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?’” (Matthew
26:67-68).
The Shrouded Face (in
derision) ~ “Then some began to
spit on Him, and to blindfold Him,
and to beat Him, and to say to Him, ‘Prophesy!’ And the officers struck Him with the palms of
their hands” (Mark 14:65).
The Struck Face (in
opposition) ~ “And having
blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the
face and asked Him, saying,
‘Prophesy! Who is the one who struck
You?’” (Luke 22:64).
The Scarred Face (in
substitution) ~ “Just as many were
astonished at you, so His
visage was marred more than any man” (Isaiah 52:14a).
additional comment ~ Many
artist images of Christ make Him out as an attractive man of His time
period. But note what the Scripture
says: “For He shall grow up before Him as a tender
plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He
has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we
should desire Him” (Isaiah 53:2).
contemplate: (1) “And we
[mankind] hid, as it were, our faces from Him” (Isaiah
53:3). (2) “They [His believers]
shall see His face” (Revelation 22:4a).
the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew
16:15). This is the most important
question you will ever answer. If you do
not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake
anyone can make!
