2 Epitaphs

~ Regrets or No Regrets?  ~

First Epitaph  ~  In 1860 during his final moments, an infidel named Wilmot laid his emaciated hand on the Bible and solemnly said, “I see now that the only objection to this book is my bad life.”

Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The Lord will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:28-31)

Second Epitaph  ~  In contrast to Wilmot were the last words of Charles Wesley ten years later. “I shall be satisfied with Thy likeness; satisfied—satisfied!”

These all died in faith [the previous list of individuals who lived a life of faith in God], not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:13-16).

bottom line  ~  Living without God means dying without hope!
