God Attribute, 147

~ Miracle Worker ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ There are at least 44 miracles of Jesus listed in the four Gospels. At least five of these are listed in all four of the Gospels. One example is Jesus feeding 5,000 men plus women and children.

Scripture ~ “After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

“Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?’  But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

“Philip answered Him, ‘Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.’

“One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ‘There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?’

“Then Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, ‘Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.’  Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, ‘This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world’” (John 6:1-14, see also Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17).

Quote ~ “The greatest miracle that God can do today is to take an unholy man out of an unholy world and make him holy, then put him back into that unholy world and keep him holy in it.” —Leonard Ravenhill

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

God Attribute, 145

~ Merciful ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ It is important to recognize the difference in some key terms.

Grace is getting something good which you don’t deserve.

Justice is getting what you deserve.

Mercy is not getting something bad which you do deserve.

Scripture ~ “You are God, ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and did not forsake them” (Nehemiah 9:17b).

“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yes, our God is merciful” (Psalm 116:5).

I [God] will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more” (Hebrews 8:12).

Quotes ~ “Suppose ten people sin and sin equally.  Suppose God punishes five of them and is merciful to the other five.  Is this injustice?  No!  In this situation five people get justice and five get mercy.  No one gets injustice.” —R.C. Sproul

“The Lord’s mercy is a sea which cannot be filled, though mountains of sin be cast into its midst.  It is like Noah’s flood, which covers all and drowns even the mountaintops of heaven-defying sins.” —Charles Spurgeon

God Attribute, 144

 ~ Master ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ There are a variety of nuances in defining Master.

[1] A common one is someone who has others working for him.

[2] The word Master is also often used as an adjective referring to someone having great skill and proficiency.

God clearly fits both these concepts.

Scripture ~ [1] “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

[2] “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." (Colossians 1:16-17).

Comment ~ Do you know Him as your Master? If not, why not?

Jesus has invited you, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

God Attribute, 143

~ Majesty ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ Theologians differentiate between General Revelation [of God] and Special Revelation [from God]. Primary examples are the creation itself (General Revelation – all can see] and the Word of God [man needs to be willing to open their spiritual eyes to see].

Scripture ~ “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things” (Romans 1:18-23).

Questions ~ Why do peach trees never produce apples? Why dogs not breed with cats? Who put an entire life system in a mosquito (or the tiny “no-see-ems”)? Why is mankind (“created in the image of God”) the only thing on earth that creates new things such as airplanes or computers? Why are scientists not able to point to any examples of something mutating upwards (vs. always downward such as cancer)? Is it possible there really was and is a Creator?

God Attribute, 142

~ Lovingkindness ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Scripture ~ “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands" (Exodus 34:6-7a ESV).

“Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand, O You who save those who trust in You from those who rise up against them” (Psalm 17:7).

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings” (Psalm 36:7).

“Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You” (Psalm 63:3).

This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope.  The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21-23).

Comment ~ This Biblical word loving kindness is translated in a variety of ways in different translations including, but not limited to: “Steadfast Love,” “Loyal Love,”  “Faithful Love,” and dependable as seen below.

“I didn’t keep the news of your ways a secret, didn't keep it to myself. I told it all, how dependable You are, how thorough. I didn’t hold back pieces of love and truth for myself alone. I told it all, let the congregation know the whole story” (Psalm 40:10 MSG).

God Attribute, 141

~ God Loves YOU ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Quote ~ Jesus prayed to His Father, “You love them as much as You love Me” (John 17:23 NLT). God loves you as much as He loves Jesus.

Jesus says to His followers, “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love” (John 15:9). Jesus loves you as much as God the Father loves Jesus.

The Bible says to us, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1). God loves you so much, He made you His own son or daughter.

God’s Word declares, “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all — how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). God loves you so much, He gave everything for you. (Kathleen Kingsbury)
