God Attribute, 199

~ God Is Sovereign Over Life, Health, and Death, 5 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any” (Deuteronomy 32:39).

The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up” (1 Samuel 2:6).

My times are in Your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me (Psalm 31:15).

“Our God is the God of salvation; and to God the Lord belong escapes from death” Psalm 68:20).

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them” (Psalm 139:16).

“And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified” (Daniel 5:23).

“So the Lord said to him, ‘Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord’?” (Exodus 4:11).

Comment ~ Throughout the four Gospels we find Jesus Christ healing and even restoring life to some who were physically dead!

God Attribute, 198

~ God Is Sovereign Over Salvation, 4 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” 16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy” {Romans 9:15-16).

“But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work” (Romans 11:4-6).

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12-13).

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me” (John 6:44-45).

“And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:24-26).

“Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed” (Acts 13:48).

“Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul” (Acts 16:14).

Important Comment ~ Salvation is very much like the two sides of any coin. [1] On the heads side of the coin we know that God chooses who will be saved – that is in His foreknowledge he knows the results of all things. [2] On the tales ide of the coin there are many passages of Scripture that indicate that any and all can be saved. The most well-known of these passages is:

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:14-17).

God Attribute, 197

~ God Is Sovereign Over the Plans of Men, 3 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15).

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

“There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21).

A man’s steps are of the Lord; how then can a man understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24).

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1).

God Attribute, 196

~ God Is Sovereign Over the Weather, 2 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 But He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, ‘Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him’!” (Luke 8:24-25).

“Whatever the Lord pleases He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places. 7He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries (Psalm 135:6-7).

Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountain” (Psalm 147:8).

He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; 17He casts out His hail like morsels; Who can stand before His cold? 18He sends out His word and melts them;

He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow” (Psalm 147:16-18).

God Attribute, 195

~ God Is Sovereign, 1 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him” (Psalm 115:3 NIV).

The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Your testimonies are very sure; Holiness adorns Your house, O Lord, forever” (Psalm 93:1-5).

“All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done’?” (Daniel 4:35 NIV).

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1).

“And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” (Daniel 2:21)

Comment ~ “But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? ‘Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this”?’” (Romans 9:20 NIV).

“I don’t know who needs to see this but Isaiah 60:22 says, ‘When the time is right, I the Lord, will make it happen.’  Sleep in peace tonight, God is in control.”

Jesus Is…, 54

~ Jesus Christ Is Sovereign ~

Passages  ~  “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33).
“This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17).
“They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen.  They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (Daniel 4:25).
“And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.  They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (Daniel 4:32).
“Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’ calling a bird of prey from the east, the man who executes My counsel, from a far country.  Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass.  I have purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:9-11).
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth’” (Matthew 28:18).
“For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,  and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man” (John 5:26-27).
“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand” (John 3:35).  “Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come.  Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him’” (John 17:1-2).

Significance  ~  “Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:15-17).  In Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring’” (Acts 17:28).    “Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25-26).

Comment  ~  “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.  We are witnesses of this” (Acts 3:15-16, niv).  “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

additional remark:  For a different look and fuller understanding of the sovereignty of God see chapter 16, entitled “Under Absolute Control” in the international award winning book GOD LIGHT: Sunlight Sonlight (find details by clicking on the God Light tab above).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
