~ God Is Sovereign Over All Things, 6 ~
This
Series
~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God. Generally, we move in alphabetical order.
Introduction ~ When we
say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times
and that He rules over all things.
Scripture ~ “In Him also we have obtained an
inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all
things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11).
“The lot is cast into the lap, but
its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33).
Jesus said, “Are not two sparrows
sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from
your Father’s will” (Matthew 10:29).
“Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, when the
Lord has not commanded it? 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High?” (Lamentations 3:37-38).
“I form the light and create
darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things’”
(Isaiah 45:7).
“Declaring the end from the
beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My
counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’ 11Calling
a bird of prey from the east, the man who executes My counsel, from a far
country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have
purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:10).
“But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases” (Psalm 115:3).
“Whatever the Lord pleases He
does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places” (Psalm
135:6).
“With Him are wisdom and
strength, He has counsel and understanding.
14 If He breaks a
thing down, it cannot be rebuilt; If He imprisons a man, there can be no
release.
15 If He withholds
the waters, they dry up; If He sends them out, they overwhelm the earth.
16 With Him are
strength and prudence. The deceived and the deceiver are His.
17 He leads counselors
away plundered, and makes fools of the judges.
18 He loosens the
bonds of kings, and binds their waist with a belt.
19 He leads princes
away plundered, and overthrows the mighty.
20 He deprives the
trusted ones of speech, and takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 He pours contempt
on princes, and disarms the mighty.
22 He uncovers deep
things out of darkness, and brings the shadow of death to light.
23 He makes nations
great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them.
24 He takes away the
understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander
in a pathless wilderness.
25 They grope in the
dark without light, And He makes them stagger like a drunken man” (Job
12:13-25).
“I know that You can do
everything, and that no purpose of Yours
can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2).
“All the inhabitants of the earth
are reputed as nothing; He does
according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand
or say to Him, ‘What have You done’?” (Daniel 4:35).
