Endure Hardness

~ How Are You Doing?  4 Checkpoints ~

The Apostle Paul provided clear instructions for his spiritual son Timothy.

Endure Hardness (in the Gospel)  ~  “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8).

Endure Hardness (as a soldier)  ~  “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.  You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Timothy 2:1-3).

Endure Hardness (as a prisoner)  ~  “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the Word of God is not chained.  Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Timothy 2:8-10).

Endure Hardness (as a witness)  ~  “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5).

Christ in 2 Timothy

~ Jesus Christ Is The Resurrected Seed of David ~

The Bible is about Jesus Christ  ~  “Jesus said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?’  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself” (Luke 24:25-27).

Jesus Christ in 2 Timothy  ~  He is the Victor over death, the resurrected Seed of David, the Lord, the Righteous Judge and the rewarder of His believers.

Comment  ~  We have only touched the surface of Christ in 2 Timothy.  The Apostle Paul told us the Scriptures present many shadows of things to come but the reality is found in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:17).

4 Not “Ashamed”

~ Are You Ashamed of the Wrong Things? ~

The first part of 2 Timothy lists four things of which you should be unashamed.

Your Testimony  ~  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:7-8).

Your Savior  ~  I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. (2 Timothy 1:11-12).

Your Friends  ~  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8).

The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me” (2 Timothy 1:16-17).

Your Knowledge  ~  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Christian Life is Tough

~ The Christian Life Described as Hard Work 4 Ways ~

The Apostle Paul in his instructions to Timothy, his son in the Lord, had much to say about the reality of being a Christian. Paul was not afraid to talk about the life of a Christian being very difficult at times.

Hard Work for His Gospel  ~  “Don't be embarrassed to speak up for our Master or for me, his prisoner. Take your share of suffering for the Message along with the rest of us. We can only keep on going, after all, by the power of God, who first saved us and then called us to this holy work. We had nothing to do with it. It was all his idea, a gift prepared for us in Jesus long before we knew anything about it” (2 Timothy 1:8-9, The Message).

Hard Work as His Soldier  ~  “My son, throw yourself into this work for Christ. Pass on what you heard from me — the whole congregation saying Amen! — to reliable leaders who are competent to teach others. When the going gets rough, take it on the chin with the rest of us, the way Jesus did. A soldier on duty doesn't get caught up in making deals at the marketplace. He concentrates on carrying out orders” (2 Timothy 2:1-4, The Message).

Hard Work Can Be Misunderstood  ~  Fix this picture firmly in your mind: Jesus, descended from the line of David, raised from the dead. It's what you've heard from me all along. It's what I'm sitting in jail for right now — but God's Word isn't in jail!” (2 Timothy 2:8-9, The Message).

Hard Work as His Witness  ~  You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food — catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They'll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you — keep your eye on what you're doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God's servant” (2 Timothy 4:3-5, The Message).
