Christ in Luke’s Gospel

~ Jesus Christ Is The Son of Man Sharing Our Human Experience ~

The Bible is About Jesus Christ  ~  “Jesus said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?’  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself” (Luke 24:25-27).

Christ in the Gospel of Luke  ~  Luke was written by Dr. Luke and it is not surprising that his emphasis is on the humanity of Jesus Christ—His sharing and sympathizing with man.  Not surprisingly he begins his Gospel account with Adam.  His emphasis is on what our Lord felt.  His account particularly appeals to the Greek mind.  In Luke we find The Messiah as a friend of man.  He is the Servant of the Lord and the Son of Man.  He is also our sympathetic High Priest and Savior.

The Messiah’s Own Words  ~   Isaiah prophesied:  “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.  Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough places smooth; the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken’” (Isaiah 40:3-5).  Luke writes:

“Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.  And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:  The voice of one crying in the wilderness:Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.  Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God’’” (Luke 3:1-6).

Comments  ~  1. The fulfillment of prophecies about which Luke writes were about the life of Jesus Christ.  The references were not always about Jesus Himself but the events surrounding His time on earth (sometimes the prophecies were fulfilled by His friends or His enemies).  2. While on earth Jesus Christ often quoted Scriptures in reference to Himself.  3. The Apostle Paul told us the Scriptures present many shadows of things to come but the reality is found in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:17).

Summary of Christ in Luke’s Historical Account  ~  Luke presents Jesus Christ as Man—the Son of Man.  His emphasis is on what He felt, His ministry, and the way of wisdom.
Luke’s writing appeals to the Greek mind.  Luke’s account of Jesus Christ’s life on earth ends with the Holy Spirit—a promised Comforter for man.
