question 12:   When and by whom was the Bible divided in chapters and verses?

answer:    Stephen Langton (about 1150 – 9 July 1228), Archbishop of Canterbury, divided the Bible into chapters and verses.

comments:  Cardinal Hugo de Sancto Caro is also known to have made a systematic division of the Bible (between 1244 and 1248).  However, it is Stephen Langton’s arrangement of the chapters that remains in use today.
