Learn From Gideon, 35

~ God And You Can Be The Majority ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled.  When the 300 blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.  And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.  Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying, ‘Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.’  Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.  And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb.  They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb.  They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan” (Judges 7:21-25).

Review Judges Chapters 6-7.

Learn From Gideon  ~  God is the only One who can gain the victory!
  1. God can do great things with an obedient servant—even if that person has doubts and is fearful.
  2. Gideons 300 men defeated 300,000 enemies—1,000 to 1 odds.
  3. Nearly half of the 300,000 enemies were killed or seriously wounded.
  4. No matter the odds you are on the winning side if you are on God’s side and do things God’s way.  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Challenge For Us  ~  Gideon defeated an army 1,000 times the size of his.  What is God challenge to you today?

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.

Angels, 21of27

~ Holy Angels Are Ministers of God ~

Prolog  ~  While holy angels and fallen angels/demons are spirit beings (Hebrews 1:14), they do have personalities.

Angels Serve God  ~  “The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.  Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word.  Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, you ministers of His, who do His pleasure” (Psalm 103:19-21, also see Revelation 22:8-11).

Angels Are Involved in God’s Judgment  ~  “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory” (Matthew 25:31).  “After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.  Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God.  And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, ‘Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads’” (Revelation 7:1-3).
“When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.  Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar.  He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.  And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand.  Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth.  And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.  So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound” (Revelation 8:1-6, also see Luke 20:34-38 and Revelation 14:18-20).

Angels Monitor The Gates of Heaven  ~  “Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.’  And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.  Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.  Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west” (Revelation 21:9-13).

Angels Conduct War Against Evil  ~  “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.  So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” (Revelation 12:7-9).

Angels, 20of27

~ Angels Interact With God ~

Prolog  ~  While holy angels and fallen angels/demons are spirit beings (Hebrews 1:14), they do have personalities.

Angels Appear With God  ~  “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.  And the Lord said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’” (Job 1:6-7).

Angels Answer To God  ~  “Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.  And the Lord said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’  Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it’” (Job 2:1-2).

Angels Communicate With God ~ “Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.  And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.’  Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’  And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’” (Revelation 5:8-13, also see: Isaiah 6:1-3; Job 2:1-2; Revelation 8:1-6; 12:13-17).

Holy Angels Praise God  ~  “Praise the Lord!  Praise the Lord from the heavens;  Praise Him in the heights!  Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!” (Psalm 148:1-2).  “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.  Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’” (Isaiah 6:1-3).  “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” (Luke 2:13-14).

Holy Angels Worship God  ~  “But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him’” (Hebrews 1:6).  “Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.  And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.’  Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’  And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’” (Revelation 5:8-13).
