God Speaks, 12

Series Introduction ~ The one true God is a relational God who desires interaction with His created humans.  But it is up to each person to choose to listen carefully to the God of this universe.  In this series we look at various ways God communicates to us if we are willing to listen.  Keep in mind throughout this series that the most basic and important way to hear from God is read The Holy Bible with an open mind.

Scripture ~ This is clearly seen throughout the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament.  What follows are just some brief examples.

“And he said to them, ‘Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you.  For I know that this great tempest is because of me’” (Jonah 1:12).

“Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah.  And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights” (Jonah 1:17).

“So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land” (Jonah 2:10).

Now the Word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.’  So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.  Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent” (Jonah 3:1-3).

“Then God said to Jonah, ‘Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?’

“And he said, ‘It is right for me to be angry, even to death!’

“But the Lord said, ‘You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night.  And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left — and much livestock?’” (Jonah 4:9-11).

God Speaks, 11

~ God Speaks Through Music ~

Series Introduction ~ The one true God is a relational God who desires interaction with His created humans.  But it is up to each person to choose to listen carefully to the God of this universe.  In this series we look at various ways God communicates to us if we are willing to listen.  Keep in mind throughout this series that the most basic and important way to hear from God is read The Holy Bible with an open mind.

Scripture ~ “Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord.  Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.

“So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, ‘Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.’  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: ‘Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever.’

“Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.  For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them.  And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another” (2 Chronicles 20:18-23).

Comment ~ Throughout the history of God’s people music has been key in hearing what God requires of you.  The Book of Psalms has been called Israel’s Hymnbook.

My personal testimony is that the popular hymn “Amazing Grace” had a very significant part in my own salvation.
