Eden Lost & Recreated

~ The Bible Begins and Ends with a Garden of Paradise ~

Eden  ~  The word “Eden” has a root meaning of “garden” and contains the thought of “delight” (which is the plural of the word). With this in mind it is easy to see how the concept of Eden is that of a “garden of delight” or simply “paradise.” Eden is clearly a symbol of beauty, fruitfulness and God’s blessing (see Isaiah 51:3).

In a very real way the Bible as a whole is the story of Eden lost and Eden regained. This becomes clear by examining the first two chapters (Genesis 1-2) and the last two chapters (Revelation 21-22) of the Bible. These last two chapters picture a “river of the water of life” and “the tree of life”—once again picturing paradise.

The Beginning  ~  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ And God said, ‘See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;’ and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (1:26-31).

“This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (2:4-7). “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it” (2:15).

The Conclusion  ~  Now I [John] saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea” (Revelation 21:1). “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful’” (21:4-5). But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life”(21:27).

“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him” (22:1-3). “Then he said to me, ‘These words are faithful and true.’ And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place” (22:6). Jesus Christ said, “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last” (22:12-13). “Happy are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city” (22:14). “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (22:17). “He who testifies [Jesus Christ] to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen” (Revelation 22:20-21—the last two verses of the Bible).

the key question:  Will you be in the future Eden?  Are you sure?  If not, you can be!

Christ—Jehovah, 6of9

~ The Title “Jehovah-Rophi” ~

Jesus said, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30).

There are quite a number of Jehovah titles.  This series will focus on seven Jehovah titles which embrace the fullness of Jesus Christ for His people.  These titles include the completeness of Jehovah’s name as it is manifest in the life of Jesus Christ for His people.  These titles show how the Messiah completely meets His people’s need from their guilt to their future glory.

Jehovah-Rophi means “the Lord our shepherd,” or “the Lord my shepherd.”

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23).

In this psalm David reminds of Jehovah’s leadership but also His close intimate involvement with the details of our lives.  Those who are His understand the realities of all the promises contained in this short psalm.  It is Jehovah’s desire to lead and guide us through life’s journey.

additional thought:  In your personal study you might want to compare three roles of our Messiah: the Good Shepherd of Psalm 22 and John 10 (the suffering Savior); the Great Shepherd of Psalm 23 and the Book of Hebrews (our present Priest); and the Chief Shepherd of Psalm 24 and 1 Peter 5:4 (our future exalted King).

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Messiah, 142

~ Messiah Would Possess the Spirit of Knowledge ~

“Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:2).

The Messiah
Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:  … “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people by the remission of their sins…  So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel” (Luke 1:67, 76-77, 80).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
“A Tremendous Book”
~ Book Review of “Thy Will Be Done On Earth” by the Christian Book Lounge ~
Reproduced immediately below is one of the many positive reviews the book “Thy Will Be Done On Earth” has received.
Christian Book Lounge – “Discover & Discuss Great Books”
Thy Will Be Done On Earth: Understanding God’s Will For You
Published on September 21st, 2009
THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH: UNDERSTANDING GOD’S WILL FOR YOU by Robert Lloyd Russell (ISBN 9781606474303)is a tremendous book!
It is definitely worth reading by all Christians!  And it is a must-read for anyone seeking purpose in life.  Readers new to Christianity will find that ideas are presented clearly; more experienced Christians will appreciate the author’s thought-provoking style on an age-old subject.  Each chapter builds on the previous chapter in a practical guide to understanding how God’s will for mankind affects God’s will for each individual.  Sections of the book are heavy on graphic models, a regular gold-mine for the visually oriented.  For those less inclined to appreciate these visuals, the text walks the reader easily through the illustrations.  Highly recommend as an individual or group read.
I plan on re-reading it each and every year.  Here are some of the benefits I see as I am on my second read of this inspiring book:
1.  It is extremely well organized: you do not waste time and energy trying to figure out where the author is going with his thesis.
2.  It is interspersed with many verses.  It has a good balance of Scripture text and the author’s words.  I love that the book fills my mind with God’s Word.  Yet at the same time, I read thoughts that teach, direct, encourage, entertain me, etc., so that it is not a heavy theological book.
3.  Mr. Russell uses charts, illustrations, alliterations, and other memory devices to make the principles of the book stick in my mind long after I have read it.
4.  The chapters are bite-sized.  This gives me the option of a quick 5-10 minute read if I am rushed or indefinite amount of time if I am just enjoying the contents of the book.
5.  Mr. Russell ends each chapter with practical application questions and reflection questions.  There is a wealth of verses that accompany the questions for the person who wants a deeper study of the Biblical principles presented.
In this time of great upheaval in our nation, I believe people will be looking for real, tangible answers to life’s most important questions.  They will need to discover that God has the answers and those answers are in His Word.  “Thy Will Be Done” is a timely book to show that God’s Will is discernible and it is not that hard to understand with the right guidance.
This book is would make a good group study.
