Cross Words, 6of9

~ Words Displaying His Humanity & Suffering Physically ~

Jesus Christ made seven gripping last statements while He was dying for our sins on the Cross of Calvary.  This is part of a Sunday series looking at the last words of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Passage (phrase 5)  ~  “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst’!” (John 19:28).

Comments  ~  God the Father does not thirst.  The Spirit of God does not thirst.  The angels do not thirst.  As far as we know the devil and his demons do not thirst.  But those in hell are thirsty with an unquenchable thirst.  The Messiah drank the cup of death that we might drink of the cup of life.

Don’t Miss This  ~  (1) The irony of the Creator of all—including all the rain, springs, brooks, creeks, streams, rivers, lakes, and ocean—not having enough water for Himself.  (2) The irony of the One who is “the water of life” and the “living water” crying out with the words “I thirst!”  (3) The irony of the One who could calm the raging storm being thirsty.  (4) This was not a typical thirst.  It was the thirst of a dying man.  (5) The Son of God’s thirst for the presence of His Father was greater than the thirst for physical water.  (6) One of the first signs of physical life is a physical thirst.  One of the first signs of spiritual life is a spiritual thirst.  (7) Over time has physical comfort become more important than fellowship with God?

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Messiah, 194

~ Messiah Would Die With The Wicked ~

“Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
“And they made His grave with the wicked—but with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth” (Isaiah 53:9).

The Messiah
“Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing” (Matthew 27:44).  “Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him” (Mark 15:32).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
Fear Not, 10
~ The Israelites Were Given God’s Peace a Third Time ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).
Fear not,” or its equivalent, is recorded many times in Scripture—ALN will post one “fear not” each week during this calendar year.
This Week’s Verse  ~  “When you [Israel] go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.  So it shall be, when you are on the verge of battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people.  And he shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel: Today you are on the verge of battle with your enemies.  Do not let your heart faint, do not be afraid, and do not tremble or be terrified because of them; for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you’” (Deuteronomy 20:1-4).
The Foundation Of Peace  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid” (Psalm 27:1).
The Solution If You Lack Peace  ~  Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165).  “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Summary  ~  “No Christ = No Peace” versus “Know Christ = Know Peace”
