Messiah, 201

~ Messiah Would Be Treated As A Criminal ~

“Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
“Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).

The Messiah
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.  And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.  Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, ‘Whom do you want me to release to you?  Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?’  For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.  While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, ‘Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.’
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.  The governor answered and said to them, ‘Which of the two do you want me to release to you?’  They said, ‘Barabbas!’  Pilate said to them, ‘What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?’ They all said to him, ‘Let Him be crucified!’
Then the governor said, ‘Why, what evil has He done?’  But they cried out all the more, saying, ‘Let Him be crucified! When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, ‘I am innocent of the blood of this just Person.  You see to it.’
And all the people answered and said, ‘His blood be on us and on our children.’  Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.  And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.  When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand.  And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’  Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.  And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified” (Matthew 27:15-31).
There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.  And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.  Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do’” (Luke 23:32-34).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
Fear Not, 17
~ Sisera Knew God’s Peace ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).
Fear not,” or its equivalent, is recorded many times in Scripture—ALN will post one “fear not” each week during this calendar year.
This Week’s Verse  ~  And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, ‘Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear.’  And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket” (Judges 4:18).
The Foundation Of Peace  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid” (Psalm 27:1).
The Solution If You Lack Peace  ~  Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165).  “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Summary  ~  “No Christ = No Peace” versus “Know Christ = Know Peace”
Trios of Evil, 3of6
~ Pharisees – Sadducees – Herod ~
Key Scriptures ~ “When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.  ‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them.  Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees’’ (Matthew 16:5-6).  In the Gospel of Mark we read, “The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.  ‘Be careful,’ Jesus warned them.  Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod’” (Mark 8:14-15).
Pharisees ~ The Pharisees were a group of separatists which for the most part had sound teaching.  Their major problem was a familiar problem which continues to exist today, they were mostly form with little substance.  This in turn allowed a lax approach to morality.  They were also proud and self-righteous.
The Bible considers the Pharisees to be as bad as the Sadducees.  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers!  Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?’” (Matthew 3:7).
Sadducees ~ It is interesting to note that a number of Sadducees were among the elders of the Sanhedrin.  The Sadducees also did not believe in angels.  Someone has mentioned that they were “Sad-you-sees” because they did not believe in the resurrection (Matthew 22:23).  Therefore they had good reason to be sad!  Even the Apostle Paul agreed that if the resurrection was not a fact then they should indeed be miserable.   But tell me this!  Since you believe what we preach, that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying that dead people will never come back to life again?  For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ must still be dead.  And if he is still dead, then all our preaching is useless and your trust in God is empty, worthless, hopeless; and we apostles are all liars because we have said that God raised Christ from the grave, and of course that isn’t true if the dead do not come back to life again.  If they don’t, then Christ is still dead, and you are very foolish to keep on trusting God to save you, and you are still under condemnation for your sins; in that case, all Christians who have died are lost!  And if being a Christian is of value to us only now in this life, we are the most miserable of creatures.  But the fact is that Christ did actually rise from the dead and has become the first of millions who will come back to life again someday” (1 Corinthians 15:12-20 TLB).
Like the Pharisees, the Sadducees were in strong opposition to our Savior and His teachings.
Herod ~ It is not entirely clear to this writer why Herod is included in this passage.  It may be as some have concluded that Herod had similar beliefs as the Pharisees.  For example, the Pharisees demanded a sign from heaven and we know that Herod desired to personally witness a miracle.  Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him” (Luke 23:8).  One thing we know for sure is that the Bible classifies Herod as evil.  Both the Pharisees and Herod were not convinced or satisfied by the things Jesus had done.
The Bottom Line ~ How about you?  Are you willing to accept the Word of God and its incredible numerous eyewitness accounts of who Jesus Christ is?
