~ Jesus Christ Had (and has) Compassion
for Shepherd-less Sheep ~
General Comment
~ When Jesus saw there was always an appropriate reaction and in each case
we can learn from the event.
Today’s Scripture
~ “Then
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every
disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them,
because they were weary and
scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the
laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord
of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest’” (Matthew
9:35-38, see also Luke 10:2-3).
Application ~ Shepherds
of God’s people have an awesome responsibility before God. “Shepherd the flock
of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but
willingly, not for dishonest gain but
eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when
the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not
fade away” (1 Peter 5:2-4). “Brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment” (James
3:1). Jesus said, “And that servant who knew his
master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall
be beaten with many stripes. But he who
did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with
few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and
to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more” (Luke
12:47-48).
