Myth, 27

~ Christians Have No Fun ~

Reality  ~  Life outside of a relationship with Jesus Christ is hollow.  Having “fun” never lasts, it is short-term, and the next time the same concept is a little less fun.  Eventually there must be a new way of having fun!  Lasting satisfaction is always elusive.

Historical Perspective  ~  King Solomon, widely regarded as the richest and wisest man of his time tried all the typical ways of having fun.  He had the best food, women, parties, riches, and wealth beyond compare.  In the Book of Ecclesiastes he summarizes his experiences and his ongoing restlessness.  Solomon concludes near the end of the book that the only real lasting enjoyment and ongoing satisfaction in life is being in relationship with God.

The Solution  ~  The person who has a real relationship with Jesus Christ has peace and joy beyond human understanding.  They have the abundant life!  Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10b).

Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165).

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

Fear God, 152

~ Hezekiah Feared God ~

God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”

This Week’s Passage  ~  “Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah ever put him to death?  Did he not fear the Lord and seek the Lord’s favor?  And the Lord relented concerning the doom which He had pronounced against them. But we are doing great evil against ourselves” (Jeremiah 26:19).

Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will.

Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.

Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

Double Up

~ 3 Aspects of Christian Growth ~

From Faith to Faith  ~  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith’” (Romans 1:16-17).

From Strength to Strength  ~  “Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage.  As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a spring; the rain also covers it with pools.  They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion” (Psalm 84:5-7).

From Glory to Glory  ~  But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
