Prayer Basics, 4of5

~ The “Ins” of Effective Prayer ~

“Teach us what we should say to Him” (Job 37:19a).  In this five part series we will look at Techniques of prayer, Types of prayer, Essentials of prayer, Effective prayer, and Topics of prayer.

In The Name of Jesus Christ  ~  Jesus said, “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:13-14).

In the Spirit of God  ~  But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 20-21).  The key here is to maintain your spiritual disciplines and intimacy with God.

In Faith  ~  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind” (James 1:5-6).   “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Prayer Basics, 2of5

~ Types of Prayer ~

“Teach us what we should say to Him” (Job 37:19a).  In this five part series we will look at Techniques of prayer, Types of prayer, Essentials of prayer, Effective prayer, and Topics of prayer.

Corporate Prayer (Corporate or Congregational Prayer) ~  The Scriptures tell us that the early church prayed together.  “They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42).  Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church” (Acts 12:5).

Social Prayer (Prayer with other Christians)  ~  So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying” (Acts 12:12-13).  “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:19-21).

Personal Prayer (Prayer for specific individual needs)  ~  Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers” (Ephesians 1:15-16).  Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.  For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 3:13-14).

Secret Prayer (you alone with Lord)  ~  “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” (Matthew 6:6).
