“Senior” Verses

~ Special Verses for Those of Us Who Have Been on Earth for Awhile ~

My Pastor’s Favorite  ~  They will still yield fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and very green, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him” (Psalm 92:14-15. NASU).  My pastor, Dr. Mike Wilde, loves the sentiment in this verse—that seniors have a pivotal role in any local church body.

My Personal Favorite  ~  “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).  What I appreciate about this well-known verse is the reverse progression.  Usually we think in terms of learning to roll over, then crawl, walk, run, and possibly even fly.  But here we hath youth represented like “wings of eagles” followed by mature individuals “run” without tiring, and finally seniors the ability to keep up the Christian “walk” without fainting.

Question  ~  How about my readers?  Do you have any favorite verses for the honored citizens in your local church?  Please add a comment.

The Reporters Song

~ The “Praise Him” Psalm ~

The classic reporting facts of who, what, where, when, why, and how are all presented in the summation of the Book of Psalms.

What (the subject)  ~  Praise the Lord!
[This is the introduction of the subject of this last song of the book.]

Where  ~  Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
[In other words, praise Him everywhere you go!]

Why  ~  Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
[Praise Him for both His actions and His character.]

How  ~  Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
[Praise Him a wide variety of audible and public ways.]

Who  ~  Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
[The command to “praise Him” is for everyone.]

When (always)  ~  Praise the Lord!
[The song has made it clear that we are to always praise God.]

Psalm 150

context:  In the opening chapter of the Book of Psalms the reader is presented with the contrast between Godly person and the unrighteous person. The body of the book presents life with its joys and troubles. The book concludes with this command to praise God no matter what you are facing or what circumstances you find yourself. It is interesting to note that the word “praise” occurs three times in the opening verse and twice in every other verse!

How about you? Are you always praising God everywhere at all times for all things?

Precious Things

~ 7 Things of Incomparable Value ~

“Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious” (1 Peter 2:7a).

Precious Blood  ~  “You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

Precious Cornerstone  ~  “Therefore thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily’” (Isaiah 28:16).  “Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame’” (1 Peter 2:6).

Precious Stones  ~  “For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building.  According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it.  But let each one take heed how he builds on it.  For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.  If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.  If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire” (1 Corinthians 3:9-15).

Precious Faith  ~  “Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord” (2 Peter 1:1-2).

Precious Promises  ~  “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:3-4).

The Most Precious of All  ~  Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.’  Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,’ andA stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.’  They stumble, being disobedient to the Word, to which they also were appointed” (1 Peter 2:6-8).

Precious Death  ~  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15).
