Jesus Is…, 54

~ Jesus Christ Is Sovereign ~

Passages  ~  “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33).
“This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17).
“They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen.  They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (Daniel 4:25).
“And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.  They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (Daniel 4:32).
“Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’ calling a bird of prey from the east, the man who executes My counsel, from a far country.  Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass.  I have purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:9-11).
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth’” (Matthew 28:18).
“For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,  and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man” (John 5:26-27).
“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand” (John 3:35).  “Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come.  Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him’” (John 17:1-2).

Significance  ~  “Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:15-17).  In Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring’” (Acts 17:28).    “Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25-26).

Comment  ~  “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.  We are witnesses of this” (Acts 3:15-16, niv).  “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

additional remark:  For a different look and fuller understanding of the sovereignty of God see chapter 16, entitled “Under Absolute Control” in the international award winning book GOD LIGHT: Sunlight Sonlight (find details by clicking on the God Light tab above).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Salvation, 11

~ A Global View of Salvation ~

Salvation is not a Reward for the Righteous.
It is an available Gift for those who understand their Guilt!

Saved Apart From Works  ~  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast [your good deeds have nothing to do with salvation].  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works [the only good deeds God sees come as a result of your salvation], which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Saved To Serve  ~  “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
“And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.  For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place.  Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.  For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come” (1 Thessalonians 1:6-10).

Salvation Is Of God  ~  “‘Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!’ And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves” (Acts 28:28-29).

Salvation Is In Christ  ~  “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Timothy 2:10).

Learn From Gideon, 47

~ Strive To Finish Well ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.  Gideon had 70 sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives.  And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.  Now Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”  (Judges 8:29-32)

Learn From Gideon  ~  We come to a negative lesson from Gideon.
  1. Strive to finish well—Gideon didn’t finish well!
  2. Following a great spiritual victory and celebration (Gideon made an ephod from Midianite gold”) the people and Gideon departed from God’s ways (the ephod “became an idol to his people.  He also took a foreigner for a concubine, fathering a son [Abimelech] who turned evil”).
  3. Gideon we learn took many wives, at least one concubine, and had a child through a concubine.  That child, Abimelech, murdered all 70 of his half-brothers.  Abimelech died in battle following sinful and short reign.

Challenge For Us  ~  Are you continuing on regardless of circumstances and consequences?  Are you going to finish strong?

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.
