Sin Defined

~ Four Roots of Sin ~

Wrong Action (sins of commission)  ~  “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4).  “All unrighteousness is sin” (1 John 4:12a).

Inaction (sins of omission)  ~  “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:17).

Wrong Motivation (lack of faith)  ~  “But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).  “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Personal Comment (pride) ~  In my decades as a Christian I have never been able to identify even a single sin that didn’t contain an element of pride.

A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor” (Proverbs 29:23).  “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:5-11).

God Our Rock, 31of31

 ~ Rock of Offense, 2 ~

Introduction  ~  In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand.  This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life.  Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).

Scripture  ~  “Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.’

“Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, ‘the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,’ and ‘a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.’  They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed” (1 Peter 2:4-8).

Spiritual Gifts, 33

~ The Spiritual Gift of Apostleship ~

Opening Comment  ~  “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).

Category  ~  The Sign Gift of an Apostle of Christ.

Biblical Examples  ~  “Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead:) ...  For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:1,12).

Qualifications (to be an Apostle)  ~  Biblical statements indicate that the Apostles of Christ were temporary.  Read how the Scriptures clearly describes the qualifications of an Apostle of Christ:

(1)   To have been with Christ during His earthly ministry (Acts 1:21-22; Philippians 2:25; 2 Corinthians 8:23).  There was one exception, the Apostle Paul (see 1 Corinthians 15:8; 2 Corinthians 12:11).  People of later generation could not meet this requirement.

(2)   To have seen the resurrected Christ with their own eyes (1 Corinthians 9:1).  This was important since one of the key responsibilities of an Apostle was to give eye-witness testimony to the risen Christ.  See Luke 24:46-48; Acts 1:8, 2:32, 3:15, 5:29-32, 10:39-42, and 13:30-31.  Note that the Apostle Paul stated: "And last of all He was seen of me also” (1 Corinthians 15:8).

(3)   Church history and the Scriptures have no indication of additional Apostles being added later.

(4)   In Ephesians 2:20, Paul uses a comparison between the construction of a building and the construction of the Church, he declared that the apostles and New Testament prophets are the foundation of the Church.  You do not lay a foundation after the walls and roof have been added.  Foundations are the early part of the construction.

Time Period  ~  Based on the above the only reasonable conclusion is that Apostles of Christ were during the early Church period and then ended.  The office of an Apostle of Christ was for a very limited time and is no longer a position in the Christian Church.

Scripture  ~ An apostle was a man who had not only seen the resurrected Christ but had also been directly and personally commissioned by Him to be an Apostle.  Paul could state: “Paul, an Apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead: ...  For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:1,12).

“Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.  And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:27-28).

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).

Closing Comments  ~  “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.  Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.  Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.  Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 107

 ~ Regarding Relationship, 1of3 ~

Introduction  ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.

Scripture  ~  Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.  And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

“When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.’

For He said to him, ‘Come out of the man, unclean spirit!’ Then He asked him, ‘What is your name?’ And he answered, saying, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country” (Mark 5:1-10).
