Sin Defined

~ Four Roots of Sin ~

Wrong Action (sins of commission)  ~  “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4).  “All unrighteousness is sin” (1 John 4:12a).

Inaction (sins of omission)  ~  “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:17).

Wrong Motivation (lack of faith)  ~  “But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).  “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Personal Comment (pride) ~  In my decades as a Christian I have never been able to identify even a single sin that didn’t contain an element of pride.

A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor” (Proverbs 29:23).  “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:5-11).
