~ God Is
Sovereign Over Salvation, 4 ~
This
Series
~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God. Generally, we move in alphabetical order.
Introduction ~ When we
say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times
and that He rules over all things.
Scripture ~ “For He says
to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever
I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have
compassion.” 16 So then it
is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy” {Romans 9:15-16).
“But
what does the divine response say to him? “I
have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to
Baal.” 5 Even so then, at this present time there is a
remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by
grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But
if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work” (Romans 11:4-6).
“But as many as received Him, to
them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His
name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12-13).
“No one can come to Me unless
the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It
is written in the prophets, ‘And they
shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and
learned from the Father comes to Me” (John 6:44-45).
“And a servant of the Lord must
not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in
humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant
them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and
that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having
been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
“Now when the Gentiles heard
this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had
been appointed to eternal life believed” (Acts 13:48).
“Now a certain woman named Lydia
heard us. She was a seller of purple
from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to
heed the things spoken by Paul” (Acts 16:14).
Important
Comment
~ Salvation is very much like the two sides of any coin. [1] On the heads side
of the coin we know that God chooses who will be saved – that is in His
foreknowledge he knows the results of all things. [2] On the tales ide of the
coin there are many passages of Scripture that indicate that any and all can be
saved. The most well-known of these passages is:
“As
Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be
lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that
He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send
His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him
might be saved” (John 3:14-17).
