Passages ~ “Now
it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from
there. When He had come to His own
country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and
said, ‘Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this
not the carpenter’s son? Is not His
mother called Mary? And His brothers James,
Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His
sisters, are they not all with us? Where
then did this Man get all these things?’
So they were offended at Him” (Matthew 13:53-57).
“Then He went out from there and came
to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. And when the Sabbath had come, He began to
teach in the synagogue. And many hearing
Him were astonished, saying, ‘Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him,
that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this
not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and
Simon? And are not His sisters here with
us?’ So they were offended at Him” (Mark
6:1-3).
Comment
~ The word translated carpenter in our English Bibles has the
root meaning of craftsman or tradesman. It is very possible that Joseph’s trade was
not carpentry but some other trade—most likely a stone mason.
Significance ~ Jesus
Christ identifies Himself with the common man.
He could have entered this earth in a position of great influence and
wealth. He chose to identify with the
common man.
the key question:
“Who do you say that I am?”
(Matthew 16:15). This is the most important
question you will ever answer. If you do
not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake
anyone can make!
