~ Race, Place, Face, & Grace ~
God hates
pride or a proud heart. One of the
reasons God hates pride is that it is a root of all sin! Here are four kinds of pride to guard against:
Race Pride
~ “They
answered Him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to
anyone. How can You say, “You will be made free”?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to
you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house
forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall
be free indeed’” (John 8:33-36). This is national pride.
Place Pride
~ “My
brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory,
with partiality. For if there should
come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there
should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the
one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, ‘You sit here in a good place,’
and say to the poor man, ‘You stand there,’ or, ‘Sit here at my footstool,’ have
you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil
thoughts?” (James 2:1-4). This
is social pride.
Face Pride
~ “For
if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing
his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and
immediately forgets what kind of man he was” (James 1:24). This is personal
pride.
Grace Pride
~ “If
anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the
words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with
godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and
arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions,
useless wranglings of men of corrupt
minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of
gain. From such withdraw yourself” (1 Timothy 6:3-5). This
is spiritual pride.
Summary ~ “All of you be submissive to one another, and
be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves
under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all
your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about
like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing
that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may
the God of all grace, who called us to
His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect,
establish, strengthen, and settle you. To
Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen”(1 Peter 5:5b-11).
