Long & Short, 3of4

~ Pleasure Is Only Momentary ~

Because our activities are controlled by “time” we tend to think in the short-term.

introduction:  Time—all time—is just an indistinguishable dot on the timeline of eternity (the phrase "timeline of eternity" is an oxymoron).  God is beyond the constraints of time in both eternity-past and eternity-future.  In this short series we will look at four critical aspects of this reality.

The Non-Christian’s Joy Is Very Short  ~  The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment” (Job 20:5).  “There were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.  By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber” (2 Peter 2:1-3).

additional thought:  To have true and lasting JOY reset your priorities:
Jesus first,
Others second, and
Yourself last.

The Non-Christian’s Sorrow Will Never End  ~  The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?  Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?" (Isaiah 33:14).  “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are.  And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).  “For whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever” (Jude 13b).  “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2).

concluding thought:  Are you sacrificing the eternal on the altar of the immediate?

Identity in Christ, 128

~ I Am One Who Has an Incorruptible Inheritance ~

Introduction  ~  When Christians understand the various characteristics and aspects of the birthright which came with their second birth, they comprehend their identity in Christ.  Once Christians understand their identity, their destiny is also clear!  This series of “Abundant Life Now” posts will look at one of those facets each week.

This Week’s Verse  ~  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:3-5).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “IDENTITY IN CHRIST” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Monday ALN posts an example of Scripture’s description of aspects/characteristics of Christians—those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ, The Messiah, as their personal Savior.
(2)  This series is not intended to be an exhaustive list.
(3)  God the Father described Himself to Moses as the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).  God the Son also said “I AM” (John 8:58).
(4)  Jesus Christ is the Son of God and several times in the Gospel of John He refers to Himself as “I am.  I am the Bread of Life” (6:35-51), “I am the Light of the World” (8:12, 9:5), “I am the Door” (10:7-9), “I am the Good Shepherd” (10:11-14), “I am the Son of God” (10:36), “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (11:25), “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (14:6), “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me … Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:10-11), and “I am the True Vine” (15:1-5).
(5)  Individual Christians are also sons and daughters of God.  This series will show some of the various “I am” aspects of a Christian.
3 Ls of Christ
~ Love – Light – Life ~
John, the beloved apostle, throughout his Gospel and his three epistles emphasizes three thematic concepts of Jesus Christ.
Love  ~  Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.  He who does not love does not know God, for God is love” (1 John 4:7-8).  “We have known and believed the love that God has for us.  God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16).  Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18).
Light  ~  Jesus continued, “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (John 3:19-21).  This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).  Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).  “Then Jesus cried out and said, ‘He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.  And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.  I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:44-46).  Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12a).
Life  ~  … Jesus continued, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12b).  In the beginning was the Word [Jesus Christ], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5).
“For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will” (John 5:21).  Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.  But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.  Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.  For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself” (John 5:24-26).
“And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life’” (John 6:35). “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.  I am the bread of life” (John 6:47-48).
The Bottom Line  ~  “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (John 14:6).  “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.  Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25-26).  “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31).
