~ The Motive For Conversion ~
Introduction ~ True
conversion includes a new attitude toward God, shown forth always by an outward
change in the life.
In
this series of posts, we look at 1) the need for conversion, 2) the process
of conversion, 3) the motive for conversion, 4) objections to
conversion, 5) correct thinking about conversion, 6) how conversion
occurs, and 7) evidence of conversion.
Scripture
~
“Now those who were scattered after the
persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and
Antioch, preaching the Word to no one but the Jews only. But some of them were
men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the
Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with
them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11:19-21).
“Ephraim shall say, ‘What have I to do
anymore with idols?’ I have heard and observed Him.
I am like a green cypress tree; your
fruit is found in Me. Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who
is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; the
righteous walk in them” (Hosea 14:8-9).
“But what things were gain to me, these
I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the
excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered
the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and
be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but
that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by
faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the
fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I
may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:7-11).
Quote ~ “True
conversion means turning not only from sin but also from depending on self-made
righteousness. Those who trust in their own righteousness for conversion hid
behind their own good works. This is the reason that self-righteous people are
so angry with Gospel preachers, because the Gospel does not spare those who
will not submit to the righteousness of Jesus Christ!” —George Whitefield
