Learn From Gideon, 2

~ Desperate Situations Often Result in Desperate Prayers ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  “Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord.  So the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel.  Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains.  So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey.  For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it.  So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites (Judges 6:1-7).

Learn From Gideon  ~  In my early Christian years I would often feel guilty about being more earnest in prayer when I was going through difficult times.  But, this doesn’t surprise God!  Read through the Psalms and you will find numerous phrases such as “In my distress I cried out to God.”
(1)   Always remember that God is always there for you.
(2)   Learn to be just as intentional in your prayer life during the good times.
(3)   God wants His people to “pray always” (Luke 21:36; 2 Thessalonians 1:11).
(4)   The Disciples set the example of praying continually (Acts 6:4).

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.
