Satan in Matthew 4, 3of9

~ Satan Knows God’s Word ~

 

Series Note:  Matthew 4 is a well-known chapter which gives an account of Satan tempting Jesus Christ in the wilderness.  There has been a lot written and discussed regarding these three temptations (the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life). 

 

While the study of Matthew 4 is a rich study regarding our Savior Jesus Christ it also allows us to have insight into some of Satan’s abilities and actions.  This series contains nine examples which make it clear that Satan is a real personality. 

 

Scripture ~ “Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.  For it is written: “He shall give His angels charge over you,” and, “In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone”’” (Matthew 4:5-6). 

 

Satan was quoting from Psalm 91:11-12. 

 

Comment ~ It is important that realize Satan is not ignorant of the Word of God.  However, when he uses God’s Word he twists it or leaves out important parts of what he is quoting.

~ Public Figure ~

 

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

 

Introduction ~ Jesus was a transparent public figure. He spent much of His time with others, whether in the synagogue or out about in daily life. As He taught and as He performed miracles crowds began to follow Him.

 

Teacher ~ Jesus taught others in many ways – perhaps the best known are His parables.

 

Preacher ~ Jesus taught the Gospel in many ways and wherever He went.

 

Healer ~ He healed many people as recorded throughout the four Gospels.

 

Miracle Worker ~ His first recorded miracle was producing wine from water at a wedding. Other examples include His casting out of demons and raising people from the dead.

 

Scripture ~ “Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him — from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan” (Matthew 4:23-25).

 

Comment ~ Mary, His mother, gained full confidence in her Son.

 

“His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it’” (John 2:5).

~ Evidence of Conversion ~

 

Introduction ~ True conversion includes a new attitude toward God, shown forth always by an outward change in the life. 

 

In this series of posts, we look at 1) the need for conversion, 2) the process of conversion, 3) the motive for conversion, 4) objections to conversion, 5) correct thinking about conversion, 6) how conversion occurs, and 7) evidence of conversion.

In honor of the veterans of the Civil War, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., who had been wounded three times during that war, said the following in a Memorial Day Address in 1884:
