Jesus Is…, 37

~ Jesus Christ Is The Rock ~

Passage  ~  “Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.  For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:1-4).

Significance  ~  Jesus said, “Whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.  But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell.  And great was its fall.  And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Matthew 7:24-29).

Comment  ~  What is your life built on?  If your foundation is the spiritual Rock of Jesus Christ you can whether any storm that life throws at you.  “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written: ‘For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.’  Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Fact Check, 64

~ Good People ~

People Think  ~  “Mankind is basically good.”

The Bible Says  ~  As it is written:There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.  They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one’” (Romans 3:10-12).  All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Speaking of believers—those who are viewed by God as having Christ’s righteousness (not their own) the Scripture says this:  “All of us used to be just as they are, our lives expressing the evil within us, doing every wicked thing that our passions or our evil thoughts might lead us into. We started out bad, being born with evil natures, and were under God’s anger just like everyone else” (Ephesians 2:3, TLB).

The Solution  ~  “Jesus answered and said to Nicodemus, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’” (John 3:3).

“As through one man’s [Adam] offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s [Jesus’] righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life” (Romans 5:18).

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).

Comment  ~  All parents who are honest with themselves know that we are all sinners.  Parents don’t teach infants to misbehave, but it isn’t long before there sweet little new baby is displaying their sin nature.

Learn From Gideon, 28

~ Trust God Without a Specific Sign ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, ‘Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.  But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.’  Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp.  Now the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude” (Judges 7:9-12).

Learn From Gideon  ~  Gideon trusted God without needing a miraculous sign.
  1. Previously (Judges 6:25-40) we find Gideon honestly seeking a sign.
  2. Now Gideon has grown.  The book of Hebrews provides the definition of maturity in Christ: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.  For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.  But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Hebrews 5:12-14).
  3. Now God is asking Gideon to step out in faith (“Arise, go down against the camp”).
  4. God offers reassurance (“Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand”).
  5. Gideon is now facing a huge crisis of faith:  the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.”
  6. Gideon obeyed God (“he went down”).
  7. As we will see further on God kept His word to Gideon.

Challenge For Us  ~  Can you trust God when asked to do something beyond your ability without having a miraculous sign from above?

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.
