~ No Idols ~
Key Passage
~ Jesus said, “Do not think
that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).
Old Testament Command (#2) ~ “You shall not make for yourself a carved
image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down
to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord
your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing
mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Exodus
20:4-6).
“You shall not make for yourself a carved
image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve
them. For I, the Lord your God, am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the
third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to
thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments” (Deuteronomy 5:8-10).
New Testament Responsibility
~ Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters; for
either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the
one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” (Luke
16:13).
Additional Passage
~ “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On
these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew
22:37-40).
Comment ~ An idol is anything which takes a higher
priority in your life, or your thinking, than God. Careers, bank accounts, automobiles, hobbies,
sports, vacations, people are all capable of becoming a higher priority in your
life than God.
