~ Do Not Swear ~
Key Passage
~ Jesus said, “Do not think
that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).
Old Testament Command (#3) ~ “You shall not take the name of the Lord your
God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in
vain” (Exodus 20:7).
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your
God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in
vain” (Deuteronomy 5:11).
New Testament Responsibility
~ Jesus said, “Again you have
heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You
shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor
by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of
the great King. Nor shall you swear by
your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’
‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is
from the evil one” (Matthew 5:33-37).
Additional Passage
~ “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On
these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).
Comment ~ God wants inward reality—not outward
pretense. “The Lord does not see as man
sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the
heart’” (1 Samuel 16:7b).
