~ There Is Only One True God! ~
Key Passage
~ Jesus said, “Do not think
that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).
Old Testament Command (#1) ~ “And
God spoke all these words, saying: ‘I am
the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house
of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:1-3).
“And Moses
called all Israel, and said to them: ‘Hear, O Israel, the statutes and
judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be
careful to observe them. The Lord our
God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those
who are here today, all of us who are alive.
The Lord talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of
the fire. I stood between the Lord and
you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord; for you were afraid
because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: ‘I am the
Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of
bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me’” (Deuteronomy 5:1-7).
New Testament Responsibility
~ “Again, the devil took Jesus up
on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world
and their glory. And he said to Him,
‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you,
Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him
only you shall serve.”’ Then the
devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him” (Matthew 4:8-11).
Additional Passage
~ “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On
these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).
Comment ~ There is only one Creator—the only true God
(manifest in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But mankind’s sin nature causes movement
towards worshipping the creation rather than the Creator!
Listen to the
words of Jesus Christ in the historical account of the Samaritan woman at the
well. “Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you
will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know
what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will
worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit,
and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.’ The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is
coming’ (who is called Christ). ‘When He
comes, He will tell us all things.’
Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He’” (John 4:21-26).
