Fact Check, 55

~ Be Happy ~

Bible Quotation?  ~  “God wants you to be happy.”

The Bible Says  ~  This is not a Bible quotation and the thought is not consistent with Scripture.  Sometimes it is the ugliness and pain of earth that brings a person to accept the truth of the Word of God.  The Christian should be constantly bringing praise to God and finding true joy and contentment in Him.

“God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:4-10).

The Significance  ~  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Comment  ~  There is a significant difference between being happy and being joyful.  Happiness is dependent on circumstances while joy is internal from settled issues of the heart.  As a child I learned the J-O-Y acrostic: Jesus first, Others next, and Yourself last.

Learn From Gideon, 19

~ Peer Pressure Can Derail ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  Now it came to pass the same night that the Lord said to him, ‘Take your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the wooden image that is beside it; and build an altar to the Lord your God on top of this rock in the proper arrangement, and take the second bull and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the image which you shall cut down.’  So Gideon took 10 men from among his servants and did as the Lord had said to him.  But because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city too much to do it by day, he did it by night” (Judges 6:25-27).

Learn From Gideon  ~  Peer pressure can derail obedience.
  1. Gideon apparently became doubtful and then reluctant—even after his calling, he continued to make excuses and question.
  2. Partial obedience is disobedience.
  3. True obedience includes what God says to do, how God says to do it, and when God says to do it.

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.

10 Commandments Today, 8of14

~ Do Not Be Adulterous ~

Key Passage  ~    Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.  I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).

Old Testament Command (#7)  ~  You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14).
You shall not commit adultery” (Deuteronomy 5:18).

New Testament Responsibility  ~  Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell” (Matthew 5:27-30).

Additional Passage  ~  “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).

Comment  ~  To love another person as you love yourself includes wanting the very best for that person.  It includes putting the other person first as in the old acronym for JOY: Jesus first, Others second, and Myself last.
