Heritage

~ The Biblical Heritage of the United States ~

The following is from “I Never Thought I’d See the Day! – Culture at the Crossroads,” a book by Dr. David Jeremiah, pages 198-200.

Introduction  ~  Consider how the following dimensions of America’s government directly reflect Biblical values:

Constitutional (Covenantal) Government  ~  A mutual agreement between governor and governed.  (Reflects the covenant between God and Israel.)

Representative Government  ~  Governors chosen from among the people.  (Reflects the way the New Testament Church leaders are selected.)

Equity of All  ~  All citizens have equal standing before the law in a republic.  (Reflects the Biblical idea that all stand equally before God.)

Rule by Law  ~  Laws of man must reflect the revealed laws of God rather than the whims of a monarch.  (Reflects the Biblical idea that the Creator-God of Scripture is the Lawgiver and Judge of all.)

Liberty  ~  All have the right to freedom.  (Reflects the liberty and freedom from condemnation found in Christ Jesus.)

Recognition of the Depravity of Man  ~  Man is not capable of governing himself; laws are needed to keep depravity in check.  (Reflects the Biblical notion that “all have sinned” [Romans 3:23].)

Separation of Powers  ~  Executive, judicial, legislative branches.  (Reflects the tripartite rule of God as outlined in Isaiah 33:22: “The Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our Lawgiver, the Lord is our King; He will save us.”)

Christian Action, 2of39

~ Be A Non-Conformist ~

Series Note  ~  In just the single chapter of Romans 12 the Apostle Paul gave believers a list of 39 things which are part of the Christian life which pleases God.  This chapter is crying out saying, “If you name Jesus Christ as your Savior then please act like a Christian!  It is Paul’s “To Do List” for us.  The key principle is that while you and I cannot change God’s character (who He really is) we have the clear potential to damage His reputation (what others think He is).

Scripture to Meditate On  ~  “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.  And do not be conformed to this world” (Romans 12:1-2a).

Comment  ~  The world system and its secular values are in many cases the antithesis of Godly values.  Live your life with eternity in view.  When I was a young man I heard a saying which I have never forgotten: “Don’t sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate.”

Related Passage  ~  “Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17).
