Question – Jesus, 5

~  Regarding Affection ~

Introduction  ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.

Scripture  ~  “And He said to him, ‘You have rightly judged.’  Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman?  I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.  You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.  You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.  Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.  But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.’
Then He said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ (Luke 7:43-48).

“But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, ‘Why do you reason because you have no bread?  Do you not yet perceive nor understand?  Is your heart still hardened?  Having eyes, do you not see?  And having ears, do you not hear?  And do you not remember?  When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?’
They said to Him, ‘Twelve.’
‘Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?’
And they said, ‘Seven.’  So He said to them, ‘How is it you do not understand?’” (Mark 8:17-21).

Comment  ~  We have a saying, “Actions speak louder than words.”  And in Christ’s case He sees beyond the visible to the reality of the true heart condition.

Jesus Came To…, 8

~ Jesus Christ Came To Give The Father’s Words ~

Passage  ~  “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world.  They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.  Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You.  For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me” (John 17:6-8).

Significance  ~  After Christ left this earth and returned to the Father this responsibility was passed to His followers.  “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore [as you are going about your life] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’  Amen” (Matthew 28:18-20).  “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Myth, 9

~ You Need More Self-Esteem ~

Introduction  ~  Rather than more self-esteem our real need is for more self-worth based upon God’s Word.  In fact, sometimes efforts to build self-esteem have the result of self-destruction.  It is interesting to note that the Bible teaches nothing about self-esteem but plenty about self-worth.

Key Passages  ~  “In the image of God He made man [you]” (Genesis 9:6b).  “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:14).  “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?  For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:3-5).  First, our self-worth comes from God’s creation of mankind.

Second, our self-worth comes from God’s great love for us.  “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:14-17).  Think about that!  How could you possibly be worth more than for God to do that for you personally?

The Reality  ~  God allowed His only begotten Son to die for your sins—no matter how much of a sinner you are.  The Apostle Paul before his conversion persecuted God’s people, but God loved him, saved him, and used him mightily for His kingdom.  But Paul recognized these great realities and could say, “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.  And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.  This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.  However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.  Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever.  Amen” (1 Timothy 1:12-17).

The Results  ~  Self-esteem varies wildly based upon factors such as our successes, the faces we put forward in public, and how others consequently view us.  However, our self-worth never fluctuates because it is based on solid facts of who we are from a Biblical perspective.

The Bottom Line  ~  As a Christian our value is not based on what we do or what others think about us—it is based on what the God who made us says about us and what He has done for us.
