You Need More Self-Esteem ~
Introduction ~ Rather
than more self-esteem our real need
is for more self-worth based upon
God’s Word. In fact, sometimes efforts
to build self-esteem have the result of self-destruction. It is interesting to note that the Bible
teaches nothing about self-esteem but
plenty about self-worth.
Key
Passages ~ “In the image of God He made man [you]” (Genesis
9:6b). “I will praise You, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul
knows very well” (Psalm 139:14). “When I
consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which
You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man
that You visit him? For You have made
him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and
honor” (Psalm 8:3-5). First, our self-worth comes from God’s
creation of mankind.
Second,
our self-worth comes from God’s great love for us. “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in
Him should not perish but have eternal life.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world
to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John
3:14-17). Think about that! How could you possibly be worth more than for
God to do that for you personally?
The
Reality ~ God allowed His only begotten Son to die for
your sins—no matter how much of a sinner you are. The Apostle Paul before his conversion
persecuted God’s people, but God loved
him, saved him, and used him mightily for His kingdom. But Paul recognized these great realities and
could say, “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He
counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an
insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in
unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love
which are in Christ Jesus. This is a
faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy,
that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to
those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible,
to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen” (1 Timothy 1:12-17).
The
Results ~ Self-esteem
varies wildly based upon factors such as our successes, the faces we put
forward in public, and how others consequently view us. However, our self-worth never fluctuates because it is based on solid facts of
who we are from a Biblical perspective.
The
Bottom Line ~ As a Christian our value is not based on what
we do or what others think about us—it is based on what the God who made us
says about us and what He has done for us.
