EXTRA: “Dr. R”

~ “Well Done!” ~
Earl D. Radmacher (November 29, 1931– December 8, 2014) – personal friend and mentor.

Earl was an internationally respected theologian.  As author of and contributor to many books, perhaps he is best known as the General Editor of the “Nelson Study Bible” (a.k.a. “New King James Study Bible”), which in my opinion remains the finest study Bible available.

Earl and I were both students at Sunnyside Grade School in Portland, Oregon (Earl was 10 years ahead of me).  Like myself, he had fond memories of Perky, an elderly lady who operated a store across from the playground at Sunnyside.  We also both attended every meeting (over a 6-week period) held by Billy Graham in the summer of 1950 in Portland, Oregon.  It was here that Earl gave his life to Christ.  I committed my life into Christ’s care 10 years later.

I first heard Earl’s name in the early 1960s when one of my spiritual mentors (R. Fred Elliot, father of martyred missionary Jim Elliot) mentioned him to me in very favorable terms.  It was a short time later that we met for the first time.  What a privilege to be personal friends for decades.

He was President of Western Seminary (1965—90) and later Chancellor.  At the time of his appointment he was the youngest seminary president in the country.  Earl would lead the seminary with great skill and innovation.  “Dr. R,” as he was referred to by many of his students, was fond of saying, “This life is training time for reigning time.”

Our many times together were always rich fellowship.  I’ll never forget his direct statement to me, “Bob, never forget that while you can cannot change God’s character you can damage His reputation.”  On another instance while discussing pastoral styles he quipped, “There is a world of difference between leading sheep and driving cattle.”

Earl never tired of quoting and expounding on his personal life verse, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

During his life of serving God, Earl traveled literally millions of miles, taught thousands of hours in churches and conferences, and influenced unknown thousands around the world for the kingdom of God.

Messiah, 185

~ Messiah Would Be Spit On ~

“Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.  For the Lord God will help Me; therefore I will not be disgraced; therefore I have set My face like a flint, and I know that I will not be ashamed” (Isaiah 50:6-7).

The Messiah
“And the high priest arose and said to Him, ‘Do You answer nothing?  What is it these men testify against You?’  But Jesus kept silent.  And the high priest answered and said to Him, ‘I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!’  Jesus said to him, ‘It is as you said.  Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.’  Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, ‘He has spoken blasphemy!  What further need do we have of witnesses?  Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!  What do you think?’  They answered and said, ‘He is deserving of death.’ Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, ‘Prophesy to us, Christ!  Who is the one who struck You?’” (Matthew 26:62-68).  “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.  And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.  When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand.  And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’  Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.  And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified’” (Matthew 27:27-31).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
Fear Not, 1
~ Abram Knew God’s Peace ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).
Fear not,” or its equivalent, is recorded many times in Scripture—ALN will post one “fear not” each week during this calendar year.
This Week’s Verse  ~  “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram.  I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward’” (Genesis 15:1).
The Foundation Of Peace  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid” (Psalm 27:1).
The Solution If You Lack Peace  ~  Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165).  “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Summary  ~  “No Christ = No Peace” versus “Know Christ = Know Peace”
Stand Fast in 2015
~ 4-Step Formula For Making Next Year Count For Eternity ~
Stand Fast in the Liberty (decision)  ~  Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1).  Decide and keep on deciding to stay away from your former lifestyle and live by the control of the Holy Spirit.
Stand Fast in the Faith (devotion)  ~  “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.  Let all that you do be done with love” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14).  Keep your first love always remembering the life which Christ has rescued you from.  Love your fellow believes and the lost the way Christ loves.
Stand Fast in the Lord (discipleship)  ~  “Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved” (Philippians 4:1).  Learn at His feet and follow His guidance.
Stand Fast in One Spirit (unity)  ~  “Let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God.  For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me” (Philippians 1:27-30).  The Church of Jesus Christ is one body—we are all dependent on one another, so live that way.
