Christian Walk, 1of3

~ The Three Walks of the Christian ~

Our Old Walk (past)  ~  “You He [Jesus Christ] made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others” (Ephesians 2:1-3).

Our New Walk (present)  ~  “What shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not!  How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?  Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?  Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:1-4).

Our Future Walk (prospective)  ~  Jesus said, “They shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy” (Revelation 3:4b).  Christians are “worthy” only because they have accepted the free gift of salvation through the shed blood of Jesus Christ—and are now seen by God as cloaked in the righteousness of Christ.

Identity in Christ, 72

~ I Am Saved FOR Good Works ~

Introduction  ~  When Christians understand the various characteristics and aspects of the birthright which came with their second birth, they comprehend their identity in Christ.  Once Christians understand their identity, their destiny is also clear!  This series of “Abundant Life Now” posts will look at one of those facets each week.

This Week’s Verse  ~  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:8-10).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “IDENTITY IN CHRIST” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Monday ALN posts an example of Scripture’s description of aspects/characteristics of Christians—those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ, The Messiah, as their personal Savior.
(2)  This series is not intended to be an exhaustive list.
(3)  God the Father described Himself to Moses as the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).  God the Son also said “I AM” (John 8:58).
(4)  Jesus Christ is the Son of God and several times in the Gospel of John He refers to Himself as “I am.  I am the Bread of Life” (6:35-51), “I am the Light of the World” (8:12, 9:5), “I am the Door” (10:7-9), “I am the Good Shepherd” (10:11-14), “I am the Son of God” (10:36), “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (11:25), “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (14:6), “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me … Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:10-11), and “I am the True Vine” (15:1-5).
(5)  Individual Christians are also sons and daughters of God.  This series will show some of the various “I am” aspects of a Christian.
Jesus Saw, 4
~ Jesus Christ Calls Matthew to Discipleship ~
General Comment  ~  When Jesus saw there was always an appropriate reaction and in each case we can learn from the event.
Today’s Scripture  ~  “As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’  So he arose and followed Him” (Matthew 9:9).
“Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them.  As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office.  And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’  So he arose and followed Him” (Mark 2:13-14).
“After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office.  And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’  So he left all, rose up, and followed Him” (Luke 5:27-28).
Application  ~  How about you?  Jesus is calling you to discipleship.  He knows everything about you including the number of the hairs on your head.  Jesus said, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30).  Since He knows such detail He certainly knows your God-given potential—in fact He is the One who created you in your mother’s womb.  “You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb.  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.  My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.  Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.  And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.  How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!  How great is the sum of them!  If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand” (Psalm 139:13-18a).
He is also the One who is working in the background making sure that everything that happens to you has meaning as He prepares you for eternity with Him.  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
He knew you before the foundations of the earth—continue reading from that last verse:  “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Romans 8:28-30).  In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:11-12).  In other words, life on earth for the Christian is preparation time for reigning time!
