Fear God, 34

~ Government Leaders Are To Fear God ~

God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”  

This Week’s Passage  ~  “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue.  The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God’” (2 Samuel 23:2-3).

IMPORTANT Comment  ~  In our modern world there is much difference in opinion regarding the best form of human government (democracy, republic, monarchy, socialism, communism, etc.).  I would suggest the form of government is not the crucial thing—rather what is important is the character of the leaders!  Before condemning my statement think for a minute about the best possible government.  …  The best government this world will ever see will be a righteous dictator when Christ rules! 

Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will. 

Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.

Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

question 28:  What is the shortest prayer in the Bible?

answer:  “Lord, save me,” uttered by Peter while he was sinking (Matthew 14:30).

“So Jesus said, ‘Come.’  And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.  But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’  And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.  Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly You are the Son of God’” (Matthew 14:29-33).

~ A Key Requirement ~

Do you know the ultimate purpose of prayer?

The following is an excerpt from a book.

Prayer’s ultimate purpose is to accomplish the will of God on earth. “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15). This passage sounds like you will receive the answer to your prayer as long as you ask according to His will. This is true. Remember, however, that in addition to God’s general and specific will, there is the matter of His sovereign will.

Prayer is not a method for changing God’s mind but rather a way to take hold of God’s willingness to work all things for good on your behalf (Romans 8:28). This is why you must search the Scriptures to align your will with God’s. In order to pray in the will of God, you must be filled with the Word of God!
