Water In John’s Gospel, 1of11

~ John 1 – Jesus’ Baptism ~

Introduction  ~  The Gospel of John contains numerous references to water.  In fact over half (11 of 21) the chapters reference water.  We will look at those passages in this series.

Scripture  ~  John answered them, saying, ‘I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.  It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.’  These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold!  The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!  This is He of whom I said, “After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.”  I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.’
And John bore witness, saying, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.  I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”  And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God’” (John 1:26-34).

Notes  ~  1. Even before Jesus was baptized John declared that Jesus is “The Lamb of God” (see also Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22).
2. John also testified that Jesus was “The Son of God.”
3. John doesn’t provide a witness of Jesus’ baptism in this passage (that record appears in Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-22).
4. John does relate how Jesus appeared at the Jordan River at the place where John was baptizing others.
5. John does tell us that Jesus is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit (1:33).

The Key Question  ~  Do you possess the abundance of “living water” which is only available through Jesus Christ.

Christian Action, 18of39

~ Keep The End In View ~

Series Note  ~  In just the single chapter of Romans 12 the Apostle Paul gave believers a list of 39 things which are part of the Christian life which pleases God.  This chapter is crying out saying, “If you name Jesus Christ as your Savior then please act like a Christian!  It is Paul’s “To Do List” for us.  The key principle is that while you and I cannot change God’s character (who He really is) we have the clear potential to damage His reputation (what others think He is).

Scripture to Meditate On  ~  “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope” (Romans 12:10-12a).

Comment  ~  The “blessed hope” of the Christian is the absolute certainty of the future return of Jesus Christ to earth.  (The word translated hope in English translations of the Bible contains the meaning of an absolute reality—it is not a wish or contain the meaning of our English word hope.)

Related Passages  ~  “The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.  And the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.  And thus we shall always be with the Lord.  Therefore comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).  “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.  For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52).  Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last” (Revelation 22:12-13).

Jesus Is…, 51

~ Jesus Christ Is Holy ~

Passages  ~  “And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’” (Isaiah 6:3).
“The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within.  And they do not rest day or night, saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!’” (Revelation 4:8).

Significance  ~  “Are You not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One?  We shall not die.  O Lord, You have appointed them for judgment; O Rock, You have marked them for correction.  You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness.  Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, and hold Your tongue when the wicked devours a person more righteous than he?” (Habakkuk 1:12-13).

Comment  ~  A root concept in the Biblical word holy is unique.  Holy is not only purity and righteousness but it includes all the uniqueness of God.  He is unlike any other!  “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:13-16).

additional remark:  For a different look and fuller understanding of the holiness of God see chapter 13, entitled “Uniquely Unique” in the international award winning book GOD LIGHT: Sunlight Sonlight (find details by clicking on the God Light tab above).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
