Little Faith, 6of9

~ Learn to Have Faith by Observing Creation ~

Passage  ~  “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.  Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.  Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them.  Of how much more value are you than the birds?  And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?  If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?  Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?  And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind.  For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things.  But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.  Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.  Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’” (Luke 12:22-34).

Comment  ~  Luke also records this event which Matthew recorded (Matthew 6:25-34).  Perhaps it is recorded twice in Scripture because of its critical importance.  Our problem is we take our eyes off of Jesus.  Fortunately He never takes His eyes off of His children.

Little Faith, 5of9

~ True Faith Is Not Governed by Circumstances ~

Passage  ~  “Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.  Then Jesus said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.’  And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘It is because we have taken no bread.’  But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, ‘O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?  Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?  Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up?  How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? — but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’  Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees” (Matthew 16:5-12).

Comment  ~  The bad news:  In our weakness and humanness we get afraid.  The good news:  Jesus never gets afraid.  He is our leader—we must keep our eyes on Him.

Little Faith, 4of9

~ Strong Faith is Not a One Time Event ~

Passage  ~  “Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.  And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.  Now when evening came, He was alone there.  But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.  Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.  And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’  And they cried out for fear.  But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer!  It is I; do not be afraid.’

“And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’  So He said, ‘Come.’  And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.  But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’  And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.  Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly You are the Son of God’” (Matthew 14:22-33).

Comment  ~  This is the second storm recorded by Matthew (c.f. 8:26).  Matthew in these two accounts records “little faith” in each situation.  Peter is a good representative of the disciples—and of us today!  Our Lord’s reply is “Don’t be afraid, I Am…”  Jesus says, “Be of good cheer!  [i.e., take courage]  It is I; do not be afraid.”  We cannot survive on yesterday’s faith.  Faith needs to be constantly strengthened.
