What Was The Penalty For Violating The Law? ~
Scripture ~ “Now
while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering
sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who
found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the
congregation. They put him under guard, because it had not been explained what
should be done to him. Then the Lord
said to Moses, ‘The man must surely be
put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the
camp.’ So, as the Lord commanded Moses,
all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones,
and he died” (Numbers 15:32-36).
Comments ~ Today
we live in a time of grace. God is
dealing with people in a much gentler way than He did under the Mosaic
Law. But it will not always be so. Everyone will have to give an account of
themselves at a future time. “Therefore,
since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same
mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no
longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but
for the will of God. For we have spent
enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked
in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable
idolatries. In regard to these, they
think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of
dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is
ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that
they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in
the spirit” (1 Peter 4:1-6).
