4 Women

~ Four Women in the Book of Revelation ~

Jezebel (Thyatira—the church in the dark ages)  ~  We read our Lord’s words concerning the corrupt church:  “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:  I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.  Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.  And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.  Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.  I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.  And I will give to each one of you according to your works.  Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.  But hold fast what you have till I come.  And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations — “He shall rule them with a rod of iron; they shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels” — as I also have received from My Father; and I will give him the morning star” (Revelation 2:18-28).  The church is feminine—Christ’s bride.  Thyatira was the Roman church during the dark ages.

The Woman (Israel)  ~  We read about a woman, a child, and a dragon:  “Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars.  Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth.  And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.  His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.  And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.  She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron.  And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.  Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days” (Revelation 12:1-6).

Babylon (the apostate church of the Great Tribulation)  ~  We read about the Scarlet Woman and the Scarlet Beast:  “Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.’  So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness.  And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.  The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.  And on her forehead a name was written:  MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.  I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.  And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement” (Revelation 17:1-6).

The Bride (the true Church)  ~  We read concerning the New Jerusalem:  “And He said to me, ‘It is done!  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.  He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.  But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.’  Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.’  And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.  Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west” (Revelation 21:6-13, cf. 48:30-35).  This is all about the true Church of Jesus Christ in the post-millennial city—her eternal home.

God Our Rock, 23

 ~ God Is My Rock, 4 ~

Introduction  ~  In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand.  This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life.  Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).

Scripture  ~  “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.  Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.  They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him” (Psalm 92:12-15).

Comment  ~  An eBook which ties in nicely with this Scripture is “GOD’S CHILD: Like A Tree” which has been described as “The definitive work on Psalm One” by a prominent Dallas Seminary Professor.

Spiritual Gifts, 27

~ The Spiritual Gift of Preaching ~

Opening Comment  ~  “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).

Category  ~  We are still in the broad classification of grace gifts which I think of as the medical community.  The Gift of Preaching could be considered the spiritual Physical Therapist.

Preaching is mentioned many times in Scripture and there are many gifted preachers.  It is interesting to note that the gift of preaching is not mentioned in Scripture specifically as a gift.  Clearly it was in the days of the early church and remains so today.  There is no question that preaching can be a spiritual gift.  I good friend of mine and spiritual mentor once told me, “Bob, I am not a good speaker, but I am a gifted preacher.”  I knew him well and that was a true statement.

Definition  ~  Primarily "preaching" is a technique, a methodology, a delivery vehicle for exercising Biblical gifts such as: Teaching, Exhortation, and Evangelism.  As in the use/misuse of all grace gifts it is possible for a preacher to be exercising, in a fleshly way, natural abilities such as skill in oratory.

Biblical Examples  ~  Jesus Christ (i.e., the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7), the Apostles Paul (i.e. Mars Hill, Acts 17:22-31) and Peter (Acts 2:14-42), and others.

Traits  ~  While not an exhaustive list, here are some characteristics to consider:

Accepts the Bible for what it says without doubt.

Persists even when inwardly discouraged, and works harder to achieve results.

Speak clearly, organize and present material so that others understand.

Encourage people to continue in Christian growth by taking the next step.

Like decisions to be made, once people have heard the truth.

Enjoy addressing a large group, feel uncomfortable sometimes in one-to-one settings.

Tells people when they are doing wrong, and encourages them to build a disciplined life.

Find the foundational truths of Scripture to be worth repeating over and over.

Challenges people to set high standards of Biblical conduct for their daily activities.

Plan appealing presentations to get people to respond with positive changes in behavior.

Closing Comments  ~  “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.  Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.  Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.  Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).
