~ Infinitude ~
This series of posts looks at some of the many
attributes of God. Generally, we move in alphabetical order.
Introduction ~ The God of the universe is
incomprehensible. But He has revealed a lot in General Revelation (what we can
observe in our surroundings). He has also inspired a written record (The Holy
Bible) or Special Revelation. He most certainly has not revealed all things to
humans.
General Revelation ~ “For the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who
suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is
manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of
the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by
the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they
are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify
Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their
foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:18-22).
Special Revelation ~ “All Scripture [The Holy
Bible] is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God
may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
The Reality ~ Many of God’s traits are beyond our
finite comprehension including His omnipotence (unlimited power), His
omniscience (all knowing), and His omnipresence (everywhere simultaneously
present), as well as many other traits.
Consider just one thing that modern science has revealed:
the known universe is about 93 billion light years across. Light travels nearly
six trillion miles in a year.
Have you ever marveled at how an apple tree never produces
apricots? “Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that
yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind,
whose seed is in itself, on the earth;’ and it was so. And the earth
brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the
tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third
day” (Genesis 1:11-13).
Scripture ~ It is no wonder that Isaiah was inspired
to write: “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’
says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways
higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts’” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My
footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of
My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,’
says the Lord. ‘But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a
contrite spirit, and who trembles at My Word’” (Isaiah 66:1-2).
