Benefits For God’s People, 49

~ God’s Mercies Are New Each Morning ~

Series Information ~ The Bible is full of promises to those who have trusted in God as their only true source of salvation. Most of the 100+ posts in this series are exclusively for God’s family. These postings are far from an exhaustive list! It is important to realize you are not a member of God’s family unless you have made a specific intentional decision to trust Jesus Christ as your savior. If you have not done that or are not sure if you have then I suggest you settle it today. Here is a good website which will help you: https://www.focusonthefamily.com/faith/what-must-i-do-to-be-saved/

Series Theme Scripture ~ For as many as are the promises of God, they all find their Yes [answer] in Him [Christ].  For this reason we also utter the Amen (so be it) to God through Him [in His Person and by His agency] to the glory of God” (2 Corinthians1:20 amp).

This Post Scripture ~ “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. 22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. 23  They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21-23).

Bible Humor,

~ Who Was The Shortest Person In the Bible? ~

This Series ~ I hope these posts lighten your day as we take a light-hearted look at some Scripture verses. Some of these views of passages may be well known to you, but hopefully others will be new.

Note ~ Our inaugural post in this series is a rerun of one of our all-time reader’s favorite past posts on Abundant Life Now (February 2, 2010).

Question For Today ~ Most people can quickly tell you that Methuselah was the oldest person in the Bible (Genesis 5:27), but do you know who was the shortest person in the Bible?

Who do you think was the shortest person mentioned in the Bible?
(a) Goliath
(b) Bildad
(c) Nehemiah
(d) Zacchaeus
(e) James
(f) Peter
(g) Paul
(h) Mary

A common answer is Zacchaeus based on Luke 19:2, which tells us that he was a short man. Recall that he was concerned that he would not be able to see Jesus when He passed by. So Zacchaeus remedied his problem by climbing into a sycamore tree.

Some might suggest James, the cousin of our Lord and the author of the Epistle of James, might be shorter than Zacchaeus since he is referred to in Scripture as “James the less” (Mark 15:40) which in the original language literally meant “little” (compared to James the son of Zebedee).

Others will suggest that a shorter man than Zacchaeus or James was Nehemiah since names in Scripture often had significance and his name, knee-high-miah, obviously indicates he was very short.

But considering the names of Biblical characters, some people might point out that Nehemiah was obviously a giant compared to Bildad who was a Shuhite (shoe-height) and therefore obviously shorter than a knee-high individual (Job 2:11).

Still others, who are not as much into focusing on the meaning of names as considering the whole of Scripture, have a different view. They simply state that obviously Peter was the smallest of all since he was so tiny he was able to sleep on his watch (Matthew 26:40).

God Attribute, 200

~ God Is Sovereign Over All Things, 6 ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is in absolute control at all times and that He rules over all things.

Scripture ~ “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11).

“The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33).

Jesus said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will” (Matthew 10:29).

“Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, when the Lord has not commanded it? 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High?” (Lamentations 3:37-38).

“I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things’” (Isaiah 45:7).

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’ 11Calling a bird of prey from the east, the man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:10).

“But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases” (Psalm 115:3).

“Whatever the Lord pleases He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places” (Psalm 135:6).

“With Him are wisdom and strength, He has counsel and understanding.

14 If He breaks a thing down, it cannot be rebuilt; If He imprisons a man, there can be no release.

15 If He withholds the waters, they dry up; If He sends them out, they overwhelm the earth.

16 With Him are strength and prudence. The deceived and the deceiver are His.

17 He leads counselors away plundered, and makes fools of the judges.

18 He loosens the bonds of kings, and binds their waist with a belt.

19 He leads princes away plundered, and overthrows the mighty.

20 He deprives the trusted ones of speech, and takes away the discernment of the elders.

21 He pours contempt on princes, and disarms the mighty.

22 He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings the shadow of death to light.

23 He makes nations great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them.

24 He takes away the understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in a pathless wilderness.

25 They grope in the dark without light, And He makes them stagger like a drunken man” (Job 12:13-25).

“I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2).

“All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done’?” (Daniel 4:35).

Ten, 16

~ Ten Commandments, 2 ~

Introduction ~ This series is about portions of Scripture which specifically mention ten (10) items. (I am aware that there are those in my readership who are into Biblical numerology.) All Scripture is from the New American Standard (Updated) unless otherwise specified (emphasis added). The Scripture below is one of many passages which specifically mention ten of something.

Scripture ~ “So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone” (Deuteronomy 4:13).

Numerology ~ Scripture numerologists often refer to the number ten as referring to as fullness or completeness. Following is one explanation:

“In connection with five, and as very near akin to it in meaning, we may take ten.  It is but five times two, as I have already said.  The ten fingers and toes are plainly so, and they give us respectively man’s capacity for action and competence for an upright walk.  But the measure of capacity is that of responsibility, and the measure of responsibility is that of judgment or of reward.  Thus ten plagues fell upon Egypt.

“The Ten Commandments are on the two tables of testimony, the measure, on the divine side, of man’s responsibility.

“In the kingdom of the ten tribes

“The ten toes of the image in Nebuchadnezzar’s vision enable the feet to stand firm – are what answer to the ten horns upon the fourth beast in that of the prophet – again the measure of power.

“In the ten virgins of the parable, responsibility is enforced; and here they are five wise, five foolish.  The testimony here is that of the bridegroom’s return.

“Finally, in the tithe demanded by God in Israel, we have the whole (of whatever it might be) looked at as composed of ten parts, the measure of responsibility, of which God takes one in token of His sovereignty.” –F.W. Grant
