Apostle Paul, 5of7

~ Consider 4 Areas in Philippians 3 Where Paul Had Reason to be Proud ~

The Passage  ~  Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!  For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:2-6).

Pride of Ancestry  ~  “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; …” (Philippians 3:5a).

Pride of Orthodoxy  ~  “… concerning the law, a Pharisee …” (Philippians 3:5b).

Pride of Activity  ~  “… concerning zeal, persecuting the church; …” (Philippians 3:6a).

Pride of Morality  ~  “… concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:6b).

3 Onlys

~ 3 Great Truths From 3 Onlys ~

Only Leaves (all that man gives to God)  ~  “And seeing a fig tree by the road, He [The Messiah] came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, ‘Let no fruit grow on you ever again.’  Immediately the fig tree withered away” (Matthew 21:19).  This is a picture of all that man tries to do for God—refusing to accept that God has done it all for man!  This first only illustrates man’s empty profession.

Only Jesus (what God gives to man)  ~  “While he [Peter] was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.  Hear Him!’  And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.  But Jesus came and touched them and said, ‘Arise, and do not be afraid.’  When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only” (Matthew 17:5-8).  A picture of the only acceptable gift of man to God—trusting His provision!  The second only is God’s priceless possession.

Only Believe (God’s one way of salvation)  ~  “While He [The Messiah] was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, ‘Your daughter is dead.  Do not trouble the Teacher.’  But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well’ (Luke 8:49-50).  A picture of a larger picture—man can be made well spiritually which is far more important than physical health.  The third only illustrated the believer’s joyful confession.

Identity in Christ, 69

~ I Am Saved By God’s Grace Alone, 2 ~

Introduction  ~  When Christians understand the various characteristics and aspects of the birthright which came with their second birth, they comprehend their identity in Christ.  Once Christians understand their identity, their destiny is also clear!  This series of “Abundant Life Now” posts will look at one of those facets each week.

This Week’s Verse  ~  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:8-10).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “IDENTITY IN CHRIST” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Monday ALN posts an example of Scripture’s description of aspects/characteristics of Christians—those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ, The Messiah, as their personal Savior.
(2)  This series is not intended to be an exhaustive list.
(3)  God the Father described Himself to Moses as the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).  God the Son also said “I AM” (John 8:58).
(4)  Jesus Christ is the Son of God and several times in the Gospel of John He refers to Himself as “I am.  I am the Bread of Life” (6:35-51), “I am the Light of the World” (8:12, 9:5), “I am the Door” (10:7-9), “I am the Good Shepherd” (10:11-14), “I am the Son of God” (10:36), “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (11:25), “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (14:6), “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me … Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:10-11), and “I am the True Vine” (15:1-5).
(5)  Individual Christians are also sons and daughters of God.  This series will show some of the various “I am” aspects of a Christian.
