~ Jesus Christ Is the Son of Man in the
Book of Daniel ~
The Bible is about Jesus Christ
~ “Jesus
said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that
the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?’ And
beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said
in all the Scriptures concerning Himself” (Luke
24:25-27).
In Daniel
Jesus Christ—The Messiah is seen as the smitten stone that fills the earth, the
fourth man in the fiery furnace, the King of kings, and most clearly as the
“Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven.”
Daniel
recounts several visions from God. Of
particular interest for our purpose are the following two passages. “I was watching in
the night visions, and behold, One like the Son
of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before
Him. Then to Him was given dominion and
glory and a kingdom, that all peoples,
nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting
dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be
destroyed” (Daniel 7:13-14). Note
two very important factors, (1) His kingdom would be universal, and (2) His
kingdom will last eternally!
In the next chapter we find Gabriel interpreting this vision. “Then it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was
seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having the
appearance of a man. And I heard a man’s
voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, ‘Gabriel, make this
man understand the vision.’ So he came
near where I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but he
said to me, ‘Understand, son of man, that the
vision refers to the time of the end’” (Daniel 8:15-17).
The
Son of Man in the Book of Daniel is The Messiah (literally the “Anointed
One”). “Now while I [Daniel] was
speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and
presenting my supplication before the Lord
my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer,
the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused
to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and
said, ‘O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the
command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved;
therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision: Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish
the transgression, to make an end of sins,
to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to
seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the
going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven
weeks and sixty-two weeks; he street shall
be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be
cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall
destroy the city and the sanctuary. The
end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are
determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant
with many for one week but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to
sacrifice and offering. And on the wing
of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation,
which is determined, is poured out on the desolate’” (Daniel
9:20-27).
Comment
~ We have only touched the
surface of Christ in the Book of Daniel. Much more could be said about each of
the previous examples.
additional comment: Some liberal
scholars claim that Daniel did not write the book which we call Daniel. Here is what our Lord Jesus Christ said while
speaking about the future Great Tribulation, “Therefore when you see the
‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet,
standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand)” (Matthew
24:15).
The Apostle
Paul told us the Scriptures present many shadows of things to come but the
reality is found in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:17).
