Myth, 119

 ~ Life’s Goal Is Personal Satisfaction ~

Myth  ~  The only real purpose in life is to be happy and satisfied.  This is expressed in overt ways such as.  “You only go around once.”  “Live life with all the gusto you can.”  “Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die.”  This philosophy is also expressed in many subtle ways – often ways that are not even recognized by those who live this way.

Reality  ~  Mankind was made in the “image of God” (Genesis 1:27, 9:6).  Our Creator desires a relationship with each of us and we will never find real satisfaction until we have that relationship.  “You [God] will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

Scripture  ~  King Solomon, purported to be the wisest man to ever live sought satisfaction through all our normal human efforts – yet it was elusive until he found mankind’s purpose.  This is how he summarizes man’s purpose:

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear [revere] God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all.  For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).

Quotes  ~  “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” —Jim Elliot

“Don’t sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate.” —unknown
