~ Remembers ~
This
Series
~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God. Generally, we move in alphabetical order.
Introduction ~ This post
is a little different than most in this series. It focuses more on the meaning
of God’s remembrance.
Scripture ~ “No more
shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know
the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest
of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I
will remember no more” (Jeremiah 31:34).
“For
I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their
lawless deeds I will remember no more” (Hebrews 8:12).
“‘This
is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I
will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds, I will write them,’
then He adds, ‘Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’
Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin”
(Hebrews 10:16-18).
~
Problem ~
If,
as we believe, God is all-knowing (omniscient) how could He possibly forget
(“remember no more”)? The answer is that
translating the Biblical languages into English varies from relatively easy to
almost impossible. What the Scripture is saying would be better understood as I
will not hold those sins against them any longer (since they have already
been forgiven).
Comment ~ As humans
we are told to Remember!
“Therefore,
I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set
the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and
their bows. And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and
to the rest of the people, ‘Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord,
great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters,
your wives, and your houses’” (Nehemiah 4:13-14).
“For
I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord
Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had
given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body which is broken
for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same manner He also took the cup
after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as
often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ For as often as you eat this
bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes” (1 Corinthians
11:23-26).
